Version 1.6 of my generic, front-end for fsck and mkfs has been
uploaded to the incoming directories on sunsite.unc.edu and
tsx-11.mit.edu as fsutil-1.6.tar.z. To help avoid potential problems
caused by the required naming convention, ready to install binaries
and man pages for all popular file systems have also been uploaded as
fsutil-1.6.bin.tar.z.

What follows is the README for version 1.6:

This is version 1.6 of my generic, front-end for fsck and mkfs. This
little utility takes the guess-work out of trying to remember the
often cryptic name for a particular file system-specific utility. In
most cases, you can simply type 'fsck /dev/xyz' without regard to the
file system type. Mkfs is similarly supported, but is (IMO) of
dubious value. When invoked as fsck, it also supports a 'check all'
option.

The fs-specific programs are expected to be named fsprog.fstype, where
fsprog is the root program name (fsck or mkfs) and fstype is the type
of the file system. For example, the minix file system checker should
be called fsck.minix and the extended file system builder should be
called mkfs.ext. This naming convention was adopted because it allows
new file system types to be supported without having to recompile the
front-end.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You should rename your current utilities to follow
the new naming convention *before* installing this utility. If you
don't, you will overwrite your minix file system programs.

If you would like to see this utility become standard in the Linux
community, please drop a note to your favorite package or file system
maintainer asking them to use the new naming convention in their next
release. Fred N. van Kempen has decided to use it in his upcoming
LINUX/Pro release.

Changes from version 1.0 to 1.6 (most by Fred N. van Kempen,
waltje@uwalt.nl.mugnet.org)

Changed -F option to -t to be consistent with mount(8).

Added -A (check all) option for fsck(8).

Allow "blocks" parameter to be omitted for mkfs(8).
