                                Announcing

                             *** SysAdm ***

A System Administration Package for Linux
             (specifically for Slackware based systems)

                   First PRE-ALPHA release, V0.0.0

(Expect this to have bugs and not be complete.
Use at your own risk. :-)

The Sysadm project aims to create a diverse package of tools to make
system administration under linux easier. This includes (but is not
limited to) adding/removing programs, system configuration, kernel
upgrading.

The philosophy of this project is as follows:

(i) provide a diverse package of tools that would help an
administrator perform much of the day to day management tasks
and system configuration.

(ii) while the tools are meant to be user-friendly, we would like to
encourage administrators to learn how to interact with Linux through
the shell. Thus we intend to show the shell/system commands (or
equivalents) that are executed when a manager performs a certain
function.

(iii) This package is designed primarily for inexperienced
administrators, although it should have many functions that an
experienced adminstrators would find useful. It will include numerous
pointers to relevent documentation, etc.

NOTE: This is being made available so that interested programmers
can contact us if they wish to help and/or contribute to the sysadm
tools. In particular, we are hoping to find psyched (pshycho?-)
people with experience in X programming, and/or configuring mail;
however we are more than happy to hear from anybody with ideas for the
project.

The following modules have already been implemented---at least in part:

a Package Manager which adds several types packages,
displays packages in several formats and can audit the
package size and flag unused packages,
very fast package removal even when checking to see if
files are owned by other packages.
                and archive installed packages.
a Swap Manager that will create and delete swap files and
swap partions at the administrators request,
a Kernel Manager for upgrading/compiling/configuring the kernel.

The next module, which we are just begining to work on is one
to help perform changes to certain config files.

ncurses support is already mostly there (should be completely
by the end of the week)

This release is available from SERANGOON.MIT.EDU as
/pub/sysadm/sysadm-0.0.0.tgz (this is the entire source tree). There
will be a README file in the same directory.

Send comments to sysadm-dev-se@mit.edu. If you wish to contrib ideas
or join our dynamic team of developers, you are most welcomed.
