Announcement of Linux/MIPS - Linux on Mips R4x00-based computers

After more than a year of talk about "porting Linux to Mips
processors" in various newsgroups and mailing lists, we can
now officially announce the port of the Linux Operating System
to Mips R4x00 based computers.

For people interested in this project, here's a brief summary of
what has been done yet and what will happen in future:

Current state of the project is that we've already started working
on it, ie. we have a sample R4600 board, a cross-compiling environment
running on Linux/i386 and some early "kernels" (they don't do much
more than printing "hello world" :-)).

The next step is probably to integrate the Linux/MIPS and Linux/i386
kernels into a unique source tree, probably in cooperation with
Linus Torvalds.

We plan to release a complete Linux/MIPS distribution by end of the
year or so, but this date is just a raw estimation.
We also plan to offer boards for a reasonable price, but cannot
give you details yet. However, since we sublicence an already
existing design, the platform for Linux/MIPS is guaranteed to be
available.

As soon we have something more than a "hello world"-printing kernel,
we will provide more information.

In the meantime, people *really* interested in this port can contact
<linux@waldorf-gmbh.de>, but please don't send questions like "when can
I have it", "does it support XXXX" etc. We will post answers to these
questions anyway.

We also created a linux-activists channel named "mips". You can join
this channel by sending mail to <linux-activists-request@niksula.hut.fi>
with the command "X-Mn-Admin: join mips" as the first and only line.
Since this an activists-channel, please restrict yourself to technical
questions and suggestions.

With regards,
Andy
