There have been reports of some modules sounding odd with newer versions
of the kernel. This is because the newer versions of the kernel contain
a newer version the the sound drivers. People who have a version 3.7 or
newer GUS card will be affected by this problem. The problem is that
the sound drivers set the GUS mixer volume to 100 for version 3.7 cards,
while older versions of the driver set the mixer volume to 60. Setting
the mixer volume to anything greater than 60 can cause the volume to be
'pushed' up farther than was intended by the author of the module. Some
modules have effects which rely on more accurate volume control, so they
will not play properly. There are two ways to fix this problem:
1) set the mixer volume to 60 or less by pressing '6' in gmod, or use an
external program such as xmix.
2) play the modules at a lower volume (127 or maybe lower) using gmod's
'-v' option.

I plan to modify gmod to use the newer driver's linear volume control
mode -- this will alleviate the problem.
