Linux PPP version 1.0.0 PUBLIC RELEASE
=======================

Michael Callahan callahan@maths.ox.ac.uk
Al Longyear longyear@netcom.com

After about six months of alpha testing (during most of which Linux PPP
was actually very stable), we're pleased to announce the first official
public release of Linux PPP, based on Paul Mackerras's free PPP for
BSD-derivative operating systems. This release is based on version 2.1.1
of the free PPP code.

The Linux PPP package provides the user-level support needed to use the
PPP driver built in to recent (1.1.13+) kernels. It also contains a
driver that works with 1.0.x kernels and earlier 1.1.x kernels. It does
not include support for Fred van Kempen's NET2E alternate networking
code.

Linux PPP can be used to make a dial-up Internet connection, and can
provide dial-in PPP accounts as well. For example, if you have a Linux PC
on an ethernet at work and a Linux notebook at home, you can set up PPP on
the office machine to allow the home notebook to dial in and use the
office network. Instructions for setting up both ends of such a
connection are given in the README.linux file in the PPP distribution.

Note that discussion of Linux PPP should take place on the PPP channel of
the Linux-activists mailing list. To join this channel, send a message
containing a single line
    X-Mn-Admin: join PPP
to linux-activists@niksula.hut.fi .

An LSM entry follows. Note that there may be an interval before the
various FTP site maintainers move the file to its final position.
