Version 1.2 of the sysklogd package has been uploaded to
tsx-11.mit.edu and sunsite.unc.edu. This package contains a network
aware version of the Berkeley syslogd utility and a companion kernel
logging facility.

Besides support for remote logging from other workstations on a
network this version of syslogd has upwardly compatible enhancements
to the syslog configuration syntax. These enhancements should be
transparent to strict Berkeley syslog.conf syntax and must be
specifically requested by the user. In addition logging to named
pipes is supported. Emphasis has been placed on developing stability
in the face of large volumes of syslog output from client programs.

The klogd facility is a stand-alone utility for logging kernel
messages. Output can be directed to a local file or klogd will run as
a client of syslogd. A one shot mode is available for logging kernel
messages at boot time in a manner similar to Ted Tso's dmesg program.
Additional features include 'smart' kernel message source detection
between the syscall interface and /proc/kmsg, optional setting of
console message levels and prioritization of kernel log messages
through the syslog interface.

Version 1.2 is primarily a maintenance release. It addresses various
bugs that user's have reported since 1.1. The most notable of these
are a race condition between the start of syslogd and when syslogd is
capable of accepting local log connections on the UNIX domain socket
and the inability of klogd to log kernel messages to a logfile when
started in one-shot mode. I would recommend that package distributors
or individuals using either version 1.0 or version 1.1 upgrade to 1.2.

Our group would like to publically thank everyone who sent in bug
reports and suggestions. They have been very helpful in straightening
out problems that have developed in the field. Version 1.3 will
include code cleanups and address network security issues and denial
of service attacks. The lsm entry follows.
