Revolutionary Software of Santa Cruz, California is now making their
relational database software available for Linux.

/rdb is a relational database system fully integrated with standard UNIX
system software. It's fast and efficient. The entire distribution,
sample programs and software included, is under 3 megabytes installed.
It comes with some third party software including a statistical analysis
package. You can develop database applications in Bourne shell scripts
or in C (it comes with a C library).

I have been a BETA tester for several months now and have had little
trouble with it. The manual is standard Sun manual format and includes
all of the stand alone utilities and the C library calls. It's around
200 pages and includes example code for most functions. There are a
little over 100 commands in rdb... here is a list:

Number freq math row testall
addcol getcols maximum schema testsearch
aka gethost mean screen timesearch
append getkey menu search todaysdate

There are versions of /rdb available for MS-DOS, QNX, Mach, Coherent,
SunOS, 4.xBSD, System V.x, HP-UX, Ultrix, Dynix, Concentrix, UniCOS,
and Xenix. Other platforms require RSW to be able to access the machine
you want it ported to.

MS-DOS systems will require a suite of UNIX utilities.

The system comes with:

* /act- a prototype small business accounting system
* /IMFun- not sure yet...
* Perlman Statistics- a public domain stat package
* SuperServer- lets's /rdb and other programs run freely across
networked 4BSD systems without users having to worry about sockets.
I assume this code can be ported to non-BSD systems.

The database editor is based on vi and there is a new one that uses
Emacs commands. /rdbX, an X-based tool for /rdb, is not available for
Linux yet but you might ask about it.

I will be doing further work with it later this summer and may possibly
put the Linux Who's Who and credits file into an /rdb table (it will
have access/printing scripts for those without /rdb though).

I have used it to develop a database application that catalogued all of
my MIDI files and would play them from within the database editor. The
custom form took all of 20 minutes to setup.

This system is capable of managing HUGE databases and is very fast.

The price is $149, discounts for multiples and resellers. There are
no user limits for a given machine running /rdb. I personally find
/rdb to be easier to use and better than Postgres, Ingres, Metalbase,
and the like. There are sql conversion programs that will even let
/rdb act as a server if you are already committed to using SQL queries.

If you want to order, call 800 736 6229.
