I thought the idea was to use a ISA card for the FDC and parallel port.
I'd like to see 16550s on the MB though. If for anything developent
reasons. How much is a dual 16550 UART? If the difference is small use
the SMC FDC37C665. In any case, I'd like IDE available in some for so I
can keep my HD.

I've been pondering the serial/parallel/IDE/FDC problem for a while now.
I had come to the conclusion that if the other SMC part was used, then
a separate 16550 part would almost certainly be needed. This would not
be so bad though, since we would then have two "low performance" serial
ports (one for mouse, one for dot-matrix printer perhaps?), and two "high
performance" serial ports (one for high speed modem, one spare?).

The ability to use 2.88 Mb floppy drives is interesting but only as a
future capability (presently too little availability of drives and media).

The 16 byte depth of the FIFO (is that per port?) is a *requirement*
for *reliable* high-speed serial communication (well, I suppose that it
might still be reliable with as few as 4 bytes per port, but anyway).
High speed modems are getting fairly common, and null-modem SLIP (at
56 or 115 Kbaud) is not totally unreasonable if, for example, the other
machine hasn't got Ethernet.

What about availability of this part?

What is giving everyone the illusion that we've got SERIAL dot-matrix
printers? I haven't SEEN any serial printers short of lasers, except
for expensive high-speed far-from-the-host band printers. Unless we
want to spend $60+ on a serial-to-parallel adapter (ah, the days of
Commodore 64!!!), most of us with printers will be getting an ISA card
with a parallel, and presumably 2 slow (or fast) serial ports anyway.
I, for one, will need a parallel port; whether it's on the motherboard, or
whether it's the multi-io card I've already got, I don't care, but it
needs to be factored into either the chips on the board or the number of ISA
slots...

Until the floppies come down to less than $50-60 per box...
1Mbps capacity would be useful for QIC-117 floppy port tape drives, but
not much else I don't think...

Well, just hook it up to your f*cking ISA bus card, then.

My only printer is a StyleWriter II -- is anyone going to write a driver for
that?! :-)

Ya know, if I knew what the spooled files look like, I could spool (using the
ToasterBus LocalTalk card) to my Mac, and print that way.

Although the price is a little bit high, can we use this multi-purpose
chip instead of SCSI + UART + PAL (for parallel port)? I like 16550,
I like bi-directional parallel port, and I have IDE drives.

Will this chip save us bucks + real estate?

The price is for low quantities, without asking for a better one.
I think in higher quantities and after some discussion it will be
around $19 or so.
But using this chip should *not* force another discussion wether
we need SCSI or not. SCSI is a *must* and is already accepted,
so far I know.
This chip just offers the choice between SCSI and IDE drives,
and this by accident. If there were the same chip without IDE
for $5 less, I would take it. But this isn't the case.

The chip will save one ISA slot. It will save one double-UART
or two single-UARTs, it will save two 20pin DIL-parts, it will
save a FDC and it will save some glue. I would say, it *does*
save real estate for a reasonable price.

Cheers,
Andy

Yes! This is exactly my thinking. This chip gives us two fast
UARTS for no extra cost in board real estate. As a _bonus_, it gives
us a bi-directional parallel port and a floppy controller for only
the cost of the connectors. Even an IDE adapter if we can find room
for that connector, too. I think this chip (what was it ??C655 ?)
is great, and will be a big help.

I also think it is great to have a manufacturer that is willing and
able to do surface mount, so that chips like this are accessible to
us. Thanks, Andy!

I do _not_want_ to give up the ISA expansion bus. I'm just concerned
that we're specifying a lot of _big_ connectors on a finite size
board. These connectors are all through-hole, too, aren't they?
That means they take up space on both sides of the board, so you
can't even put surface mount parts on the other side of the board
from the connectors.

    FYI, UART information :

National Semi NS16C552V dual 16550 UART

Pricing :

Lots of 100 : $13.10
Sample quantities : $16.50

Package : 44 Lead Plastic Chip Carrier, about .65" X .65"
