What Connie Chung said is correct, every chinese is _possible_ to become a
spy. To counter-porve what Ms Chung said, you have to prove it is impossible
for someone to become a spy. I do not think you can prove that. What she
talks is the _possibility_, she did not say every chinese will become a spy.

It is like saying every American ( some restrictions apply ) is
possible to become US president, but not everyone can actually become
president.

It is very important to have a sound logic.

_From: jz690469@mbcr.bcm.tmc.edu (Jianming Zhou), Mon, 23 May 94

CHUNG: Coming up next, Eye on American. Tonight, the biggest spy network in
American. We'll tell you who's running it and how.

CONNIE CHUNG,co-anchor:

The recent Ames spy case served as a reminder that the espionage business in
this country is still thriving; that you don't always find spies in trench
coats and that you could find them in the house next door. In a speical
investigation, CBS News found out how China is grooming agents to keep an
Eye on American.

Unidentified Woman: Only US citizens continue straight ahead.

CHUNG: Every day, planeloads of Chinese citizens arrive legally in the
United States, ordinary people. But to the Chinese government, some of them
may be future spies, who a few years down the road, will be activated to
steal American's military and technological secrets, whether they want to or
not.

Are there any other countries that you know of that have this kind of spy
network operating here in the United States?

Mr. NICHOLAS EFTIMIADES(Defense Information Agency): No, not-certainly not
to this -to this degree.

CHUNG: Nicholas Eftimiades, who works for an American spy agency, the
Defense information Agency. His new book on Chinese intelligence raises
serious quietions for American government and business.

Mr. EFTIMIADES: I don't think we can say at this point any Western
government is prepared to deal with this type of espionage threat, because
it's different from anything that we've known to date.

CHUNG: It all starts here in Beijing. A Chinese student or scientist or
businessperson applies for a visa to go to the US. Then the Ministry of
State Security starts asking questions: What can you learn in the States?
Will you be working with computers? Will you be loyal to China? And most
importantly, can you be patient? Eftimiades says the prospective spies are
trained, paid and warned to stay in touch. 'Remember,' they are told,'we'll
be watching your family members in China.' 'Lay low until you're contacted,'
they are told. It could be years.

Mr.EFTIMIADES: Let me put it to you in the terms that the Chinese
Intelligence Services describes it: Chen di yu, which is a Ministry of State
Security slang term for fish on the bottom of the ocean. This has been
defined in Western espionage as sleeper agents.

CHUNG: So they just sit there like fish at the bottom of the ocean and do
nothing?

Mr. EFTIMIADES: They wait.

CHUNG: Until they have to surface.

Mr EFTIMIADES: Exactly.

CHUNG: This man is one of those Chinese fish at the bottom of the American
ocean. Call him a reluctant spy. He's afraid he'll be contacted soon to hand
over state-of-the-art computer programs.

Unidentified Man #1: Never forget, you belong to our organization.

CHUNG:'never forget,' they told him, 'you belong to our organization.'

Man #1: You were sent by our organization.

CHUNG:'You were sent by our organization, and this organization belongs to
the Communist Party.'

Man #1: ...Communist Party.

CHUNG: Twenty-three years ago this man, Kao Yen Men, came to the US. In
recent years, he lived a quiet life in this house in Charlotte, North
Carolina. And he even bought a restaurant in downtown Charlotte. His
neighbors never knew what he was up to.

Unidentified Man #2: I really didn't know what to think. I mean, you know,
we came down to this nice little Southern city, and the next thing you know
I'm down the street from a spy. I thought this was, like, a little fiction
movie or somthing, but...

CHUNG: Some movie. After a six-year FBI investigation, Kao was arrested and
charged with trying to steal the advanced Mark 48 torpedo, engines for the
FA-18 Hornet jet fighter and radar for the F-16 Falcon jet. Kao was caught,
but security expert Pat Pattakos says most American companies are too naive
about the Chinese spy threat.

Mr. Arion "PAT" PATTAKOS(Beta Analytics): Right now a lot of people don't
really think of protecting themselves.

CHUNG: Especially when the target is information and computer data...

Mr. PATTAKOS: They'll look at all of this information here that they can
access.

Unidentified Man #3: Yes.

CHUNG: ... all part of the more and more accessible information superhighway.

Mr. PATTAKOS: I mean, it's very easy to know when a truck is missing in
front of you place. I mean, it's gone. It's a physical object. But think
about information. Information is more intangible, and people may not
know-realize that it's lost.

CHUNG: Pattakos says a new national strategy between business and government
can trap the spies. Eftimiades is much less optimistic.

Mr. EFTIMIADES: Once these spies get into American society, once they're
deeply rooted into our structure, our society's structure, we're not going
to be able to detect them. there is no way to stop them at that point.

CHUNG: The FBI is trying to help American corporations protect themselves
from espionage. The bureau has a program now to brief executives about how
their companies could become targets. Dan.

Since CBS denied they received any letter protesting against May 19th
news report, I think we should send them letters in addition to emails and
faxes. With our signatures on paper, they will think twice before denying.
Here is the mailing address of CBS News Bureau in Washington DC:

It seems to me that fewer and fewer people are talking about this event
the past several days. Do we forget a insult like this so easily? Why do we
chinese always have to take insults with silence? Come on, people! Don't
let this go by, let us all do something!

Is this all we can do ---- stop watching their news? Will they give a
damn if a handful of chinese watch their news?

No! We have to come up something stronger to protest CBS's viciously
biased report! Can someone good at english writing draft another letter
 to CBS with stronger wording?

Does anybody know CBS's email address? or Fax number? Pls post it so
that everybody can send a protest letter to them and demand an apology.

I think every city has an organization which is especially set up to
deal with hate crime. If anybody know the phone number or address, please
post it, so that everybody can file a complain against CBS and Cunny Chen.

Meanwhile, let's all cosign Xiao-lin's letter. It's better than doing
 nothing.

After I posted the draft letter to CBS protesting its allusion
of Chinese spies, the emails of co-signers are flooding in. I need
some helping hand because I also have my job to be done. Anyone
who is interested in processing the co-signere's names please
send me an email. Thanks.

I have received numerous emails who asked to co-sign the letter
protesting CBS's biased report. I have made little change. Many
people demanded stronger wording of the last paragraph, but I
think before we can substantiate a concret case that CBS's report
has induced hatred crime and discrimination, the protest should
be still at the level of demanding apology.

I have ordered the transcript of the CBS May 19 Evening News, however
it will take another two weeks to receive it. I will post the
transcript when I receive it. Anyone who had tape of the May 19
CBS Evening News, please let me know.

You are still invited to comment and co-sign the letter.

Thank you for your support.

Dear CBS President,

We are very disappointed with the CBS Evening News on Thursday, May 19.
In this news program, Connie Chung made a report about the Chinese
spies in the United States. Besides a brief report about a restaurant
onwer who stole millitary secret for China, Ms. Chung claimed that
every day there are people entering the United States from
China legally and many of them could be spies. She used the words such as
"fish at the bottom sea" and "it could be your next door neighbor"
to imply that any ordinary person with Chinese national origin
could be a spy for China. Such language will create serious distrust,
even hostility between the majority of American people and people
with Chinese national origin.

Most importantly, the report hinted that any Chinese who is hired by
an American Company might steal national secret for China.
We are concerned that such an irresponsible statement may produce an
even stronger discrimination against people with Chinese national origin
who have already suffered some disadvantage in their career, job
and livelihood.

It is our belief that most people with Chinese national origin
are law abiding citizens. Many of them have their love to both
the United States and China. They love the United States as a country
which privides them with freedom and hospitality. They love China
because the country is their motherland, a place where they have
their childhood memory. It is understandable that most of
them have good wishes to the Chinese nation. It is for this purpose
that they care about the economic development, the political
reform and human rights condition in China.

However, none of these should prompt the imagination that
they are spies trained to steal the American national secrets.
Many people have worked hard to enhance the understanding between
the people of China and America. They are working to bring China to the
international family. They are working on trade and academic communication
between the two countries. Many of them who enjoyed the hospitality
in the United States, returned the same good will to their
American friends when they went back to their home country.

As a generation of Chinese who witnessed the radical Chinese
Cultural Revolution in 1960-1970's during which many innocent
people were suspected as "KMT agent" and "American spy",
we are particularly sensitive to the allusion made in
the CBS report. We are concerned that such allusion
will contribute to a very damaging steorotype image of the people
with Chinese national origin. Although, we agree and even
admire the First Amendment of the American Constitution and
we believe Connie Chung and CBS should have the right for free speech,
we are seriously worried about the implication and impact of the CBS
report on the daily life of many innocent people.

We believe the American principle that a person is innocent
unless he/she is proven guilty. We love America for its democracy and
freedom. It is our belief that the potential
discrimination against people with Chinese national origin
as a result of the CBS report by Connie Chung is against the spirit of
human rights.

We demand a CBS apology for Connie Chung's irresponsible statement
and allusion. Otherwise we will stop watching the CBS Evening
News Program in order to protest its biased report.
