1. NCFC News: Connecting Campus Nets and User Servey (2 Items) .......... 56
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Nov 12, 1993
Contributor: Hao Xin of Computer Network Center, NCFC

Subject: NCFC backbone tested for connectivity among three campus nets

Two bridges each were intalled at Peking University's and Tsinghua
University's network centers, completing the physical link of NCFC backbone.
Connectivity test indicated that the backbone was functioning as expected.
Since PUnet already has a class B IP address, once a router is installed,
communication between PUnet and CASnet will become a reality. TUnet is
still waiting for the Internet authority to assign it an offical IP address,
so it may be a while before TUnet will join the backbone on a permanent
basis.
                            --- --- ---

Subject: First user survey was conducted on CASnet

First user survey was conducted on CASnet via email from Oct 27 to Nov 10.
Electronic survey forms were sent out to about 600 users who have accounts
on the 30 or so computers, belonging to 13 institutes/centers, which are
connected to CASnet. As of Nov 11, 22 replies have been received.
Although it is difficult to draw any statistical conclusions from such
a small sample, this survey, nonetheless, gives us some idea of how
people at the various institutes use (or do not use) the network.

People at the Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITP) are the most responsive
and the most frequent network users of all. Eight of the 22 replies came
from ITP; a range of users, from the Director to graduate students, at ITP
answered the survey promptly.

On the other hand, people at the Institute of Atmospheric Science perhaps
use computers more extensively than most users, their computers are the
longest continuous operating ones in the area CASnet covers. But not a
single user there responded to the survey.

Of the people who answered the survey, 6 were graduate students, 14
identified themselves as research scientists, and 2 were technical staff.
The majority of them (17) said that they used computers every day, but less
than half (9) used the network everyday, and 4 people said they used the
network less than once a month.

Most of the respondents said they had heard of email, anonymous ftp, and the
Internet. But more than two thirds of them have NOT heard of the newer
information tools, such as Gopher, Archie, WAIS, World-Wide-Web; nor were
they aware of Usenet- or Listerv-kind of discussion groups.

The users expected to use the network mainly on getting and exchanging
information. All 21 said they wanted to use email, to be able to transfer
files, and to have access to online library catalogs. Twenty one of them
said that they wanted to read electronic news. Of the 22 respondents,
13 wished to sign up on the local CINET-L distribution list.

There are also some problems with the survey. First, since it was
distributed electronically, it biased toward people who already have access
to the network. Second, since of the operation of the network has not been
continuous (CASnet is on only from about 8 am to 5:30 pm, and even during
this time, the operation may be interrupted by power failure or machine
problems), it may have discouraged some less network-savvy people from
answering the survey. However, it is a good start and it is hoped that
more surveys, better designed, will be carried out in the future.
