I just tested GB2PS 2.0 FTP'able from ahkcus.org:./src/unix
using Ghostscript 2.41 FTP'able from prep.ai.mit.edu:./pub/gnu/ghostscript
on a PC running msdos and it DOES NOT WORK.

The error message is `/rangecheck in --imagemask--'.

The Postscript file generated by GB2PS version 1.0 works fine with
Ghostscript 2.41. In fact, I converted the SAME GB file using GB2PS 1.x
and 2.0, one works the other does not.

People who have Ghostscript please test the file `cm.ps' included in the
GB2PS 2.0 package.

I tend to believe this is GB2PS problem rather than Ghostscript
problem.

I downloaded the gb2ps verison 2.0 from ahkcus.org to my unix system,
but when I type make (after I modified Makefile path entries), I got
the following warning messages. And after I sent my PS file to laser
printer, I got empty printout. I don't know if any of you have
similar problems. If anyone can help to fix this, you're greatly
appreciated.

I had the same trouble as the above, but when I do not produce the
cover, it work well except for a few option (such as -f fonts_size,
 and commands: B [-]nn , C nnn.nn) on SUN unix X11R4 system.
The format I used is "gb2ps -t ....".
I thing the error comes from the file "cover.ps" as neither I can preview
it with GS nor printout.

Anyway, it is convenient and useful tool.

There are two programs with GB2PS version 2.0.

The first problem is pointed out by the previous poster. It has to do
with `cover.ps'. This problem can be `solved' by not to include the
cover page by using `-t' flag or work out a new cover.ps. As a matter
of fact, the PS file generated by `gb2ps -t cm2.gb cm2.ps' ( cm2.gb is
the file included in the package as a test file ) cooperate happily
with Ghostscript.

The second problem is GB2PS 2.0 does not like single page. The problem is
very obvious. The `)' is unbalanced in the PS file GB2PS 2.0 generated and
I have found a solution, please see part of the PS code at the end of
the post with my comments. I believe it is an overlook in the C source
code and can be easily solved by a few key strokes.

I found the problem when I work on a few short poems posted on CHPOEM-L.
However when I work on a longer piece `occasion: the romantic story
about Xu Zhi-Mo' posted on CHPOEM-L and carriedby HXWZ, there isn't any
problem.

Despite of the problems, GB2PS is a very good software and deserves some sort
of reward. Has any one `ported' it to MSDOS? I hope someone work out a
makefile for msdos and put an excutable file in ahkcus.org./src/pc.

Folks have experience problem with cover.ps in gb2ps 2.0 package.
Now I have found the problem and its fix.

Please find the following line in cover.ps

/T {H_Y moveto gsave currentpoint translate H_H H_V scale 24 24 true
[24 0 0 0 -24 0 24] H_R rotate}def

and change [24 0 0 0 -24 0 24]
to [24 0 0 -24 0 24]
and _that's it_. Clearly this is a typo.

The problem was found using Ghostscript 2.41 while OpenWindow
`pageview' does not report any error.

I don't know the solution for the unbalanced `)' problem I posted before.

Disclaimer: The poster likes Ghostscript doesn't get along with pageview.

Many netters are happily using gb2ps v.2.0 now. One of its advantages
is that it allows one to change Chinese fonts. In principle, it supports
up to 6 Chinese fonts if you can find or create them all. The package
comes with only one font: the SONG style 24X24 chinese font. Can we get
other fonts (e.g., Kai, Hei, FangSong, etc.) somewhere?

The cc2tex package by Wu, Zhibiao comes with Kai, Hei, and FangSong
24*24 fonts. The only problem is the format of the files are different
from standard cclib files. If used with ChTeX without modifications,
the resulting characters would look rotated 90 degree and then fliped
(mirror image). I wrote a simple program to transform the fonts to
cclib file, also modified ChTeX to work with multiple fonts. The
result was great.

Bad news is that the program was accidentally deleted, without backup.
You could try to do it, just has to re-order the bits( by colums changed
to by rows, also delete some extra un-used charactar plans).

The original font files is at crl.nmsu.edu, /pub/chinese/fonts, named
alib.24 through flib.24.

The program 'c2cc' by Bo Yang seems to lose one vertical scanning line
of the original bitmap. You can view the converted bitmap file using
'cc', the library viewer on PC by Zhang RoXin.

Here is another little program I wrote before. It seems to do the work.
To convert alib.24 to cckai.24, which can be used by chtex, use

gbfconvt -b alib.24 cckai.24

To use this font file with chtex on a unix system,

setenv CCLIB24jt ^/lib/cckai.24
chtex -w gb_file

The program works on MS-DOS machines.

As Y. LU (Y.Lu@LUT.AC.UK) has kindly pointed out, there's a bug at c2cc.c
so that two vertical scanning lines are loosen. A silly bug, here's the fix.

--------------
This is a short program to translate the KaiTi, HeiTi, FangSong, FanTi
24*24 fonts in cc2tex-1.0 packages to cclib or ccf format, to be
used with modified ChTeX or gb2ps.

COMPILE: save this message as c2cc.c, delete the lines before --- CUT---,
          do:
                cc -O -o c2cc c2cc.c

USE: download the fonts alib.24, blib.24, dlib.24, flib.24 from
          crl.nmsu.edu, under pub/chinese/fonts.

          to use with gb2ps:
                cat alib.24 | c2cc -ccf > ckei24.ccf
                cat blib.24 | c2cc -ccf > cfang24.ccf
                cat dlib.24 | c2cc -ccf > chei24.ccf
                cat flib.24 | c2cc -ccf > cfan24.ccf

          to use with ChTeX:
		cat alib.24 | c2cc > cclibk.24
		cat blib.24 | c2cc > cclibb.24
		cat dlib.24 | c2cc > cclibh.24
		cat flib.24 | c2cc > cclibf.24

I'll release the modified Wang, Jingbai's ChTeX (ChyTeX) which works with
multiple fonts. There're some problems with gb2ps-2.0, mainly can't print same
character with different font styles on same page. Also FanTi font can't work
sometimes. Hope the author of gb2ps will fix these bugs soon.

Good Luck on your hacking

Bo

Hello, it appears that c2cc.c is testing for the -ccf option by doing
"if (argv > 1)" first, shouldn't it be "if (argc > 1)"?

Thanks.

This is a forward. I think the author's view on different lib and formatting
formats is very interesting. This is an excellent topic for some discussions.

Here I have several interesting obserbations about gb2ps v2.0:
1) it does not work well with shorter file (less than one page) e.g. dumu.gb
posted several weeks ago. For this same file, with v1.0, I can get
	DEClaser print out and can view by pageview on SUN, but v2.0 doesn't;
2) it works well with longer file (more than one page) e.g. occassion.gb.
I can view and print converted files both with v1.0 and v2.0, but
	v2.0 did speed up the printing speed and used less space;
3) if I use only one font to print, the whole file will be converted correctly,
if I use several fonts on the same file, e.g. <FS> then <FK>, then
sometimes it convert and sometimes it didn't, seems randomly pick some
characters and convert them, but the size command <FZ ...> works well
at any time, it's difficult to give an explanation.

Something came to my mind which I'd like to tell you, maybe it's worthless.
1) for different chinese software, there are different font file, I mean only
for cclib24 SongTi, there are several kinds, it takes a lot of disk
space, is it possible to reduce the number of libs for one kind font?
2) I think it's a time to work our a standard, or a general rule of programing
and documenting the chinese software, this will save a lot of time for
both users (who can learn them quikly) and the creator, just follow
	some convention.

It's a fun to try different chinese software, but it's time consuming too,
I can hardly follow the discussions on ccnet, if I didn't try anything in
a month. I hope someday I can contribute something, but now I can't even read
through those source programs.

Thanks for you help and time.

gb2ps does not ascii punctuations. I suggest you change ascii

That is what I want to say in a long time regarding formatting
commands. What a mess it is:

A1 LI3 BA1 BA1 ( Yan Yongxin ) uses psudo TeX commands.
CPL-1.1 uses its own commands.
gb2ps uses Postscript like commands.

I would suggest to establish a Chinese Computing Formatting Commands

Hi!

I FTPed gb2ps Ver.2.0, and compiled it.

It works fine and generate PS files. But when I tried to print those
PS files, the printer printed out nothing after a period of time to
process data. What's wrong?

I can neither use ghostscript (old version, Ver 2.3) to priview the ps files.

Both of them (printing and previewing) can be done when I use gb2ps 1.0.

I work on a Sparc II, running X window.

Any hints?

I would like to distribute ( well partially ) a stripped down version of
Ghostscript to print HXWZ files on HP laserjet from PC with step by step
instruction for people who are not very familair with computers.

This is the current version 2.41. Version 2.5 is to be relesed soon. But
for the purpose of printing HXWZ PS files, this version does a fairly
good job. People can always install the latest version from original
distributing site if needed.

The following is a readme file for my distribution. Interested poeple
please reply.

--

Ghostscript is fully fledged Postscript interpreter which works on many
computers and has many device drivers. I am distributing a striped
down version of it for the purpose of printing Hua Xia Wen Zhai on HP
laserjet from a PC.

OK, how to install:

1. I am going to mail you a uuencoded file. After you uudecode the file,
You should get a file gs-dist.tar.Z and after uncompress and
`untar' you should be able to get the following 12 files.

cour.pfa empty.ps gs_2asc.ps gs_dps1.ps gs_fonts.ps gs_init.ps gs_lev2.ps
gs_statd.ps quit.ps readme.xf sym__enc.ps fontmap

Also please get the following three files by uncompress and `untar'
ghostscript-2.4.1msdos.tar.Z FTPable from prep.ai.mit.edu in the
   directory pub/gnu.

dos4gw.exe gs.exe gs386.exe

Put all these 15 files in a single directory. I will use c:\ghost as
   an example.

2. Please set the following in autoexec.bat. And type autoexec.bat to
run it or switch the computer off and turn it on again.

set GS_RUN_EXE=c:\ghost\dos4gw
set GS_LIB=c:\ghost

And set the c:\ghost in the searching path.

3. To print HXWZ, type

gs386 -sDEVICE=ljet3 -dNOPAUSE pspage01 pspage02 pspage03 ... quit.ps
or
replace gs386 to gs if your computer isn't 386 and ljet3 to laserjet if
your printer is not HP laserjet III.

Please note that msdos can only accept commands up to certain limit. So
you want to rename pspage01 to something shorter, eg p01 or print first
1-5 pages and then print 5-10 pages.

It took me 11 minutes to print Hua Xia Wen Zhai #58 and the quality is
quite good.

4. Please note that I am distributing a stripped down version of
Ghostscript for the limited purpose. Please see the main distribution
FTP'able from prep.ai.mit.edu in the directory of pub/gnu ( All of the
files begin with ghostscript ) for _full_ information. If you still
have questions after `reading the funny manuals', you can post to
newsgroup `gnu.ghostscript.bug'.

Let me know if you are successful.

This is a software release announcement - hz2ps 2.1

The program "hz2ps" converts a hanzi (GB/BIG5) file to PostScript.

Hz2ps 2.1 is a slightly enhanced version of hz2ps 2.0.
Since the release of version 2.0 about a year ago, many users have
expressed their wish to print only a selected range of pages, in addition
to the whole file. Hence, we have this new version.

If only ONE page is converted, the output PostScript file should conform
to Encapsulated PostScript file version 3.0 (EPSF-3.0).
This format facilitates inclusion of the EPS file into other documents.
For example, you can include the file as a figure using psfig in LaTeX.

The program supports both horizontal and vertical printing mode with or
without page numbers. Other printing options and fonts can also be
selected. Please see the man page "hz2ps.1" for details.

The program "hz2ps 2.1" is now available on the ftp site "ahkcus.org".
(ftp as user anonymous with no need of a password)
The files are
ahkcus.org: src/unix/hz2ps-2.1.tar.Z
ahkcus.org: src/unix/hzfont.tar.Z

Enjoy!

Hi, everybody,

The new GB2PS version 2.02 is out, the ftp site is:

	bellatrix.anu.edu.au (150.203.23.14)
in pub/gb2ps/gb2ps.2.02.tar.Z.

The following is the README file of GB2PS 2.02.

Cheers,

W. SUN

====================================================================
This is GB2PS Version 2.02.

This release automatically supports the HZ encoding. It even allows
you to mix GB and HZ code together. So the name 'GB2PS' may be
misleading. Anyway, just keep it in mind, in case someone ask you "How
can I print HZ format chinese articles?".

Most bugs found in version 2.0 has been fixed. Thanks to all people who
reported these bugs.

This release also provides five chinese fonts, Song, Kai, Fang Song,
Hei and FanTi fonts. The name of the font files are: csong24.ccf
ckai24.ccf, cfang24.ccf, chei24.ccf and cfan24.ccf.

Note: Only csong24.ccf comes with gb2ps package, other fonts are in
separate files. If you have enough disk space, you can grab them all.

Before compile the program, make sure the 'CFONT' in Makefile points to
the correct path of chinese font files, and the 'COVERPAGE' has the
path and name of the cover page PS file. See 'Makefile' for more
details.

To compile GB2PS:
Type: make

Examples:
	input:	gb2ps -h
	output:	the usage of GB2PS

	input:	gb2ps cm9203d.gb cm
	output: PS programs cm

	input:	gb2ps -b 3 -e 5 cm9208a.hz cm
output:	PS program cm from page 3 to page 5.

then you can print out the chinese article by sending the PS programs
to your PS printer:

Type:
	print -P printer_name -M PostScript cm.ps

			GB2PS 2.02 HELP FILE
			====================

o What is GB2PS?
================
GB2PS is a conversion program, which converts the GB code and HZ
code article into PostScript printable files that can be printed on
PostScript printers.

o What's new in this version?
============================
In this version, GB2PS can do simple page formatting, change chinese
font and font size, select pages to be converted, cover page, page
number, etc. But more importantly, its performance has been
improved dramatically (Thanks Zhi Quan Luo,xluo@lids.mit.edu), the size
of average PS file(10 pages) reduces almost 5 times (from over 2.3MB to
about 440KB) compare with version 1.0, and printing speed is about
15~30 second/page. You don't need to worry about printer memory and
spooling area any more.

Five chinese fonts are provided in this release, they are Song,
Kai, Fang Song, Hei and FanTi fonts. This version also supports the HZ
ENCODING, so don't be confused by the name of 'GB2PS'. It can do more
than just 'GB-to-PS'.

o Usages of GB2PS
=================

  	gb2ps [-h][-y year][-m month][-i issue][-p][-t][-f][-b page_no]
		[-e page_no] input_file [output_file]

	OPTIONS:
-h Help, print the usage of GB2PS

		-y year
		-m month
-i issue	These parameters are used for generating the
cover page file, they will be passed to
				the coverpage PS file directly.
-t do not generate cover page.
-p do not generate page number.
		-f enable page formatting.
-b page_no	begin generating PS file from page page_no.
-e page_no	end generating PS file at page page_no.

Normally, PostScript program is big. In this version, I have tried
to reduce the size of PS file as much as possible. However, it's still
possible that the spooling area be overflowed if a large print job is
sent. In this case, use -b and -e options to generate a series of PS
files, then print them separately.

This version of gb2ps can automatically generate cover page for the
HXWZ printouts. The year, month and issue number can be set manually or
generated by system following the HXWZ name convention:

	cmyymmi.gb -- yy: year
			mm: month
			i: issue
	ie.cm9105a.gb

Note: The page number of cover page is 0.

COVER.PS is the cover page description PS file, users can design their
own cover page if they can follow the rules, see file COVER.PS for more
details.

Examples:
	input:	gb2ps -h
	output:	the usage of GB2PS

	input:	gb2ps cm9203d.gb cm.ps
output: Converts gb file cm9203d.gb to PS program cm.ps.

	input:	gb2ps cm9208a.hz cm.ps
output: Converts HZ file cm9208a.hz to PS program cm.ps.

	input:	gb2ps -b 3 -e 5 cm9105a.gb cm.ps
output: Converts gb file cm9105a.gb to PS program cm.ps from page
		3 to page 5.

	input:	gb2ps -f -b 6 cm9202a.gb cm
output: Converts gb file cm9202a.gb to PS program cm.ps from page
6 to the end of the article with page formatting enable.

o ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
=======================
GB2PS allows user to change the chinese characters font and cover page
PS file at run time through environment variables, these variables
are:

CFONT Chinese characters font files directory.
	COVERPAGE	Cover page PS file.

o Printing the PS programs
==========================

You can get the chinese article by sending the PS programs to your PS
printer:

		print -P printer_name -M PostScript PS_program
Examples:
print -P dcslw -M PostScript cm

* Note: The 'print' is a printing command in SUN OS(UNIX) system.

o System environment
====================
GB2PS is developed in UNIX system, but I don't think you will have any
difficulty to port it into DOS or VMS system.

o Chinese fonts
===============
GB2PS version 2.02 uses a new format chinese font file, compare
with the GB2PS version 1.0, it saves almost 220KB space. The format of
the font file is:
		XXXX YYYY
XXXX -- four digits QUWEI code
YYYY -- 24X24 chinese character bitmap

The version can support up to six 24X24 chinese fonts, Song, Fang Song,
Kai, Hei, Fan and user defined chinese font. This release provides five chinese
fonts (Thanks Bo Yang,eric@COEUS.UCSD.EDU, for his 'c2cc').

o Basic Concepts of Page Formatting
==================================
The followings are basic concepts that have being used in GB2PS.
Margins, baseline and first indent are logical concepts, they are
invisible.

o Page Formatting Commands
==========================
This version supports basic page formatting, this is done by user
manually insert the page formatting command. All the commands begin
with '<' and end with '>', you can write multiple commands in one < >.
The units that is being used in the GB2PS is point, 1 point=1/72 inch.
Space is the separator between commands. The correct command looks like
<FS FZ 10 20 ML 72>.

Note: You should give -f option when running GB2PS with page formatting.

1. Font command 'F':
The font command allow user change current chinese font, font size and
orientation.

s or S: Choose Song style chinese font.
k or K: Choose Kai style chinese font.
f or F: Choose Fang Song style chinese font.
h or H: Choose Hei style chinese font.
g or G: Choose Fan style chinese font.
u or U: Choose user defined chinese font.

z XXX YYY or Z XXX YYY:
Change font size, follow by two numbers
specifies the scale of the font in X and Y
directions. Default XXX and YYY are 10.
o or O: Switch font orientation between horizontal and vertical.

	example: <FS FZ 20 10 FO>

2. Margin Command 'M':
Margin commands control the format of the printout. For A4 paper, the
margins are from 0 to 596 horizontally and from 0 to 842 vertically.

L nnn Left margin, default is 72.
R nnn Right margin, default is 72.
T nnn Top margin, default is 72.
B nnn bottom margin, default is 72.
	I nnn
First indent. If nnn<0, the formatted paragraph
is a hang-up paragraph. The default first indent is 0.

	example:	<ML 72 MR 72 MT 72 MB 72 MI 0>

3. Other commands:
	< character '<'. Anytime when GB2PS encounters
'<<', it prints a character '<' in printout.
G nnn Set gray level, 0<=nnn<=100, default is 0.
	L nnn.nn	Line space, default is 3.0.
	C nnn.nn	Character space, default is 0.07.
B [-]nn Adjust baseline, if the number is negative, it moves
baseline up, otherwise moves baseline down.
m XXX YYY	Move current position to (XXX,YYY). XXX and YYY should
be integer. This command allows user to put text
			anywhere on the paper.
o Quality
=========
In the laser printing world, the quality of 24X24 font is really
not good enough, but, in my experience, if you make another copy on
photocopier from the original printout (printed by laser printer), this
copy will be much better in quality than the original one.

o FTP site
==========

The current GB2PS can be obtained via anonymous FTP from:

        Site: bellatrix.anu.edu.au (150.203.23.14)
        Directory: /pub/gb2ps

with '<' and end with '>', you can write multiple commands in one < >.
The units that is being used in the GB2PS is point, 1 point=1/72 inch.
Space is the separator between commands. The correct command looks like
<FS FZ 10 20 ML 72>.

Note: You should give -f option when running GB2PS with page formatting.

1. Font command 'F':
The font command allow user change current chinese font, font size and
orientation.

s or S: Choose Song style chinese font.
k or K: Choose Kai style chinese font.
f or F: Choose Fang Song style chinese font.
h or H: Choose Hei style chinese font.
g or G: Choose Fan style chinese font.
u or U: Choose user defined chinese font.

z XXX YYY or Z XXX YYY:

specifies the scale of the font in X and Y

XXX and YYY should
be integer. This command allows user to put text
			anywhere on the paper.
o Quality
=========
In the laser printing world, the quality of 24X24 font is really
not good enough, but, in my experience, if you make another copy on
photocopier from the original printout (printed by laser printer), this
copy will be much better in quality than the original one.

o FTP site
==========

The current GB2PS can be obtained via anonymous FTP from:

        Site: bellatrix.anu.edu.au (150.203.23.14)
        Directory: /pub/gb2ps

Hi netters:

I ftp-ed the CPL 1.1 package just now, and i found all the instructions very
straight forward, only one thing stopped me from printing.. :) that is, I need
ziku24 to print on the HP laserjet, which can only be produced when the PC is
connected to a 24-pin line printer. But our computer lab has only 3 HP
laserjets and 1 9-pin line printer, so i couldn't make ziku24 file for CPL 1.1.
I wish to know some more about the CPL 1.1 program, what can i do to get around
the ziku24 requirement? or some other way to print .GB files on the HP laserjet
will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best wishes

here 24 does not mean 24-pin:-) It is 24x24 font file. It is available
in src/pc/BYX directory at ahkcus.org by anonymous ftp (in byxprn2.exe
and byxprn3.exe). I remember that this info is given in cpl-11's readme file.

BTW, I like cpl-11. It prints GB files quite fast on HPLJ.

Since my last post to CCNET to thank those who helped me in getting
the new version of gb2ps, a lot of people have send e-mails to me requesting
the ftp site of the new version and especially the accompanying fonts. Because
of the large number of people interested, also in case more people may be
interested, I give the ftp site here instead of sending to them individually.
Here it is:
	ftp site:	bellatrix.anu.edu.au (150.203.23.14)
	directory:	pub/gb2ps
It is an anonymous ftp site. The new version is version 2.02 and gb2ps is
written by Willium Sun. Currently there are five fonts available. In gb2ps,
some formatting can be done, such as setting margins and scaling
up/down the font size and rotating the characters. Hope you enjoy using the
program to make some fancy print-outs as much as I do.

Anyone who wants the filters for printing Chinese with
eqn/tbl/ditroff/devps please send me email. I will be sending the
code out in 3-5 days, after I have cleaned up the documentation.

I would like to mention that the fonts are not included with my
filters. The README file in the code gives more details about where
to get the X11 fonts and some CCLIB fonts.

I have added support for Adobe's psdit to the Chinese/Japanese
printing filters for unmodified eqn/tbl/ditroff.

It will be ready to send out in about 2 days. If you want a copy of
the code, please send email.

If you install this at your site, please send me email describing
installation problems so I can improve my documentation.

The Golden Butterfly package, also known as "DynaFont",
is designed to work together with "JetMate III" - a HP LaserJet II/III
device driver and fonts library - to generate professional
quality output. Patended by its innovative curve-line approach
versus the traditional bit-mapping counterpart in manipulating
characters and graphics as well, the exceptionally powerful font
package is the leader of its kind in the market of Taiwan.
The package comes with a micro coded adapter card and a number of
 high density 5.25 inch diskettes.

In terms of JetMate III, as the name explains itself, is designed
to have files generated by Chinese wordprocessing packages be printed
on Laser printers. Besides the primary device driver functionality,
it offers more fonts and desktop publishing features. However, when
the Chinese characters are scaled up to 64x64 or even bigger, rough
edges are shown. In a secnario like this, DynaFont will take over
and smooth every scratch and turns out in an aesthetic fashion.
The dealers here do not know too much of the tech part of the
package, and the manufacturer in Taiwan is too far to ask.
But two things are for sure : fonts are scalable and perfect
smoothing capability for all the turning points in Chinese.

 >>Thanks for any information you can supply. You could
 >>reply to me or post again to CCNET.

Dealerships are available here at NY. The JetMate III is priced
at $325 and DynaFont is sold for $675. If I can be further help,
please contact me. Meanwhile, my research findings along with
sample print-outs totaled 20 pages. I could send you a copy
through the postal service if you wish.

Instead of :

GB --> Postscript
   |__ epson
   |__ HP laserjet
   |__ HP deskjet
   |__ etc etc

As you proposed, we can do this:

GB --> Postscript
                 |__ epson
                 |__ HP laserjet
                 |__ HP deskjet
                 |__ etc etc

First convert GB/Hz/Big5 to the de facto standard language
for graphic communications, i.e. Postscript and then convert Postscript
to the native languages of HP laserjet, HP deskjet and epson etc.

The advantage of this approach is the formatting can be set in the first
step from GB --> Postscript, e.g. to center a poem nicely, to include a
picture, to bold a sentence, to rotate a character to certain degree,
and many other special effects. Postscript --> whatever is just like
photocopy, the format is not changed.

GB --> Postscript is related to chinese computing while
Postscript --> whatever is not. Postscript --> whatever is
achieved by Ghostscript and I will include an announcement where
you can find FTP addresses.

I used to do HXWZ Postscript to PCL ( native language of HP laserjet )
conversion on msdos and printing PCL on the laserjet. To reduce time,
now I do HXWZ Postscript to PCL conversion on unix and then printing
PCL on HP laserjet. The printing time for a whole issue of HXWZ is
about 5 minutes. Of course the conversion time depends on the
condition of your unix machine.

Subject: Ghostscript 2.5.2 is released

Ghostscript 2.5.2 is now released. The main purpose of this release is to
fix the DeskJet and LaserJet drivers, which were still broken in 2.5.1.
As usual, see readme.doc in the fileset for a somewhat more detailed list;
see the NEWS file for a very detailed list. Note that only a subset of
the available drivers and features are included in the PC executables
distributed as GNU software: read the individual makefiles to find out
which drivers and features are included in which executables.

Ghostscript 2.5.2 may be obtained from the usual GNU distribution points.
One good place to get it is ftp.cs.wisc.edu:/pub/X/ghostscript-*2.5.2*.
This is a 24-hour-access site that allows anonymous FTP and is not heavily
loaded.

Context diffs from Ghostscript 2.5.1 to 2.5.2 have been provided.
Ghostscript 2.5.1 has been left on-line, as well as 2.4.1. 2.5 has been
deleted, although diffs from 2.4.1 -> 2.5 -> 2.5.1 have been left on-line
to help users upgrade. Both 2.4.1 and 2.5.1 will be deleted in the near
future, but the diffs will be left on-line indefinitely.

Suggestions for what should go in Ghostscript 2.6 are more than welcome.
The only new feature definitely scheduled for inclusion is the ability to
use the platform's fonts (e.g., the X bitmap fonts) when possible.
Leading candidates for other features are Type 0 (Chinese/Japanese) font
capability, the Level 2 'pattern' facility, and a major overhaul of the
general rasterizing algorithm for increased performance. Please send
suggestions directly to ghost@aladdin.com.

I would like to thank the users who helped test this release on very short
notice, and especially George Cameron for help with the printer drivers.

This is an announcement:

I just finished a Chinese (GB) file printing program for 9 or 24 pin
EPSON and compatible d.m. printers, called DM16. This program is very small
and simple. It is different from other 9pin print programs in that you
don't get elongated characters but roughly squared, using a 16x16 bitmap
font file. The overall effect is like that of 24pin printer using a 24x24
bitmap font file. If you only have access to a 9pin EPSON or compatible
printer, you should go to find out. As with GBList, DM16 comes with two
font files, one for JianTi, other for FanTi. It is very handy for printing
files like HXWZ.

I posted dm16.zip and dm16.doc under /incoming @ crl.nmsu.edu

If you can't find them, they are probably moved to /pub/chinese

To those who are interested:

I have tried the newly released HXLaser, a utility shareware for
printing GB/HZ files on most of HP laser printers. Here are some comments,
which may save others time to try the same and give some feedback to the
author for further improvement.

        1. It is the fastest Chinese printing utility I have ever met.
I used a 486 PC and a HP LaserJet series II printer. The memory of the
printer is unkown but the result of running HZTEST was 87. When I setup
HZSOFT=20 in HXLASER.CFG, it took a little more than 5 minutes to print
out CM9309B.GB. When I changed it to HZSOFT=40, the speed was almost the
same, meaning higher number after a certain point may not speed up the
printing. I could not remember how many minutes it took to print the same
file when using HZSOFT=8. But it was a little slower in that case.

        2. When I set HZSOFT=20 and 40, any English and numerical numbers
could not be printed out for pages 13-16. Everything was normal before
page 13 and after page 16. In this aspect, higher speed means loss of
quality.

I didn't try any numbers for HZSOFT between 8 and 20. I wish I could
see any test results for those numbers from others.

Anyway, HXLaser is worth trying. I believe it is good for printing
HXWZ. Many thanks for the author who released this wonderful, though not
perfect yet, program.

A user who has time to try today

Hi, Netters:

As an alternative, a separate program -- GB2BMP will be distributed as a free
software in hope that it is useful but without any warranty.

GB2BMP can read GB/CWD files or data on CWD's clipboard to export bitmap
files of ms-windows format. Therefor, one can insert Chinese characters in
true windows files or use bitmap tools to play with the characters.

The initial version -- GB2BMP 1.0 will be e-mailed to those who is interested
in testing it. After testing and some modification, I will upload this
program (probably version 1.1) and its data files. Should you want to
receive and test GB2BMP, please e-mail me a message. Otherwise, you can wait
a couple of days then ftp yourself.

Here is README.DOC
======================

Installation:
1) Decode and unzip the gb2bmp packge, put files in c:\bmp or d:\bmp.
2) CWD registered uses should put files in c:\cwd2 or d:\cwd2
3) Run windows
4) Activate a program group (i.e. Main, Games, ...) where you want to store
   GB2BMP icon by leftck it.
5) Open and select Program Mamager's [File | New]
6) Select and oked Program item in the New Program Object box.
7) Fill in following message in the Program Item Properties box:

  Description: GB2BMP
  Command Line: c:\bmp\gb2bmp.exe (or c:\cwd2\gb2bmp.exe)
Working directory: c:\bmp (or c:\cwd2 or where you install
                                     CWD 4.0 shareware version)

7) Select OK.

Requirement:

1) Any PC that runs ms-windows 3.1
2) Any Chinese word processor that save plain GB files or CWD.

Sincerely,

Mingyong Yang <LABANDR@OHSU.EDU>

Dear Netters :

I would like to share some information on the Chinese DTP software we
know on the printing issues.

About 7 years ago, there are several Chinese DTP systems developed in
Taiwan. Most of them use the Tall Tree's JLaser video interface spec to
accomplish fast printing. The DTP system will generate the whole page
image in EMS memory, then use the added INT 67 extended functions to dump
the whole image directly to laser printer engine. As you can see, the
reason for doing this is simply SPEED. There is no PDL involved and no
slow parallel port transmitting. Basically, the PC CPU is the rip -
doing all the rendering inside PC.

This kind of printing is still very popular in Taiwan. Many of the VIO
board manufacture provide not only those video driver for Chinese DTP but
also provide printing drivers for Windows. LaserMaster has a line of
products called WinJet is similar to this.

Postscript may not be very appropriate for low cost DTP but still very
important for fine output and high end printing. The rendering speed of
rip is increasing and Ghostscript is just a very simple public domain
solution. You can simply compare the output between Ghostscipt and the
demo rendering program on Sun operating system and see how much
difference there is.

You can do that by using this method:

  GB--->BMP(IMAGE)--->GIF(IMAGE)
    (1) (2)

(1) is easy.
About (2), there are some tools in net for converting BMP to GIF.
i.e. acdc3210.exe.

goo luck!
