In the list "zhongwen" Hartmut Bohn from Trier ask a few days ago,
where there exists or could be build up a database with information
on Chinese software. Since I myself had thought about such a database
it gave me a the kick to start it right now. Please comment on it,
I would like to make it better and better.

Thanks to you all for your cooperation.

                  * List of CJK-systems and programs *
                  ************************************

The following list contains some information on existing programs and
systems useful for CJK data processing. The structure and the items
already included is by no means final. Please comment on it. If you
consider it useful, I would like to update this list regulary. So be so
kind to send corrections and additions.

The list comes in a format that makes it easy to incorporate the data
in a DBS system if need arises. In the present form it is also very
easy to make changes to the structure.

Of cours the administrator of these product informatins cannot be
held responible for mistakes and omissions. This holds true especially
for prizes and addresses.

The following list contains some information on existing programs and
systems useful for CJK data processing. The structure and the items
already included are by no means final. Please comment on it. If you
consider it useful, I would like to update this list regulary. So be so
kind to send corrections and additions. There are some items, where
you'll find hardly more than the pure names. Fore these and other items
outdated or not correct, it would be very much appreciated, if expecially
those who work with such a system, could send the relevant information.
For new users it would be very important to get information on where and
how to get a system. It should be allowed to have multiple addresses in
the field "VEndor".

One way to access the information in this ASCII text is the UNIX command
GREP which allows search for special strings within a file or a groupe
of files.
                Example : GREP "^SY " chiprog
where "chiprog" is the name of the file containing the program informations,
will list all the lines beginning with "SY ". Thus you'll immediatly
get a list of all the Systems, for which there a programs described. Or use
                          GREP "^TI " chiprog
and you have a list of the programs described in the file "chiprog". For
those who contribute to the this database it means, that it's best
if all the most important information and keywords appear in the first
line of a field beginning with the two capital letters.

For DOS users there exists the program FGREP, which allows similar search
as the UNIX-GREP, but not containing as many options. For display of all
the lines containing the String "TI " in upper case, you type:
                         FGREP -c "TI " chiprog

With FGREP you might also construct a batch file which allows for the search
of two words combined with a logical AND. If this batch file is called GREP
one could say:
                         GREP SY DOS
The result would be all the lines containing the header "SY" and on the
same line the word DOS, i.e. all programms which need the DOS operating
system. Since the first four characters are the line number on the main
file (CHIPROG.TXT), one can look up the whole program information very
quickly by jumping to the said line number. When you use MICROemacs, one
may load the main file as well as the output file of FGREP into two windows
of emacs. This batch file:

  @ECHO OFF
  CLS
  IF %1.==. GOTO anzeige
ECHO Use ctrl-X X to change to the main file then jump to the desired line >t
  ECHO --------------------------------------------------------------------- >>t
  IF %2.==. GOTO ohne
  FGREP -lc %1 chiprog.txt > a
  FGREP %2 a >> t
  GOTO weiter
  :ohne
  FGREP -l %1 chiprog.txt >> t
  GOTO weiter
  :anzeige
  ECHO USE: grep word1 word2
  GOTO ende
  :weiter
  memacs t chiprog.txt
  :ENDE

The list comes in a format that makes it easy to incorporate the data
in a DBS system if need arises. In the present form it is also very
easy to make changes to the structure.

As long as the list is short I think it will be OK to post it to the
two relevant list (ccNet and Zhongwen) as it is. Additions will
probably also be distributed through the list. At a later moment it
should be made available in a archive.

Of cours the administrator of these product informations cannot be
held responsible for mistakes and omissions. This holds true especially
for prizes and addresses.

Most of the informations have been collected by myself. But whenever
I could get hold of some other list (mostly on list servers) I included
the new informations. Credit is given to these authors in the field
indicating the person who contributed (to) the item.

Dealers in Chinese software who appear more than just a few times
are listed here. In the VEndor field they will be refered by a short
name. (This list by now contains more addresses than needed for the
main body of the data below. When I encounter a Chinese computing
related address I add it to the list, because one never knows when
one needs it.). There appeared so many catalogues of Chinese software
that it is not possible to indicate all the vendors of a particular
software. I would like to have one or two vendor addresses for each
software.

Hi, everybody

I just uploaded an updated version of the file "CJK-PROG.TXT" to the
archive of crl.nmsu.edu [128.123.1.18], directory: "/pub/chinese".

In this file I collect information on different programs for handling
cjk-data. By now this file contains by now some 180 entries. If possible
I indicate the main usage of a program, the system requirements, sources
for getting it etc. I try to collect information on public domain *and*
commercial products; but I know that the list is by no means complete.

I think the list could be useful for people looking for some kind of
program handling CJK-characters; but it could also help those who have to
answer questens in this field.

The list comes in a format that makes it easy to incorporate the data
in a DBS system if need arises. Actually by now I use CDS/ISIS to keep
these CJK-records. ISIS is a very effecient DBS-system mainly for text
data. CDS/ISIS (for DOS; also mainframe versions available) was developed
by UNESCO and is distributed without any costs to non-profit educational
institutions as universities, libraries etc. With a small utility for use
with ISIS (Fangorn) it is very comfortable to downlode the tagged data
(as in this CJK-list) into ISIS. It is also possible to produce again
a tagged ASCII-file to be used on the net. If you have ISIS, I could
also send you my ISIS-file structure and the ISIS-datafile, in which I
have already tagged the keywords for building an ISIS-inverted file. This
file allows very comfortable searching in the DBS.

BTW: It's ISIS, which also allows inclusion of Chinese text when used
together with ETEN, which --- in it's most popular versions --- only
handles BIG-5 characters. CJK-prog.txt does not contain Chinese characters
but I have some other database files which have. Should anybody be
interested in handling Chinese with ISIS, I would like to explain in
more detail.

Enjoi
Urs

This is to everybody who is interesting about EPSON386.

   >My PC is EPSON386, when I install some chinese software such as zwdos to

Dear friend,

Japanese PCs is very different from IBM PCs, they are using different BIOS
(Basic Input Output System). For example, the video output and key input
is Int 10h and Int16h on a IBM PCs, (this is the basic of many chinese system)
but is Int 18h on an NEC98 or EPSON.

The adapter of EPSON, normally is 640x400, and the way to confirm an adapter
is EGA or VGA on IBM PCs, will not valid on EPSON.

   >I send this mail to concluce the result for the trouble based on the
   >advice. I find out that it seems my PC that is EPSON386 made in Japan
   >has not any of the cards(maybe realise the same with other mechanism).
   >So the conclusion is if I want to use all of the good chinese softs
   >I should buy another IBM-compatible PC machine! It is a miserable
   >result for me. It seems that there are no any chinese softs for Japan's
   >PC(NEC98&EPSON etc), of cource I hope some but....

Yes, you are right. As my knowladge, there is a company in OSAKA, have
published a word processor which can edit Chinese, English, Japanese, Korea
artical at the same time. But it takes you 100,000 yen.

If you only need to display the Chinese Artical (to read HXWZ for example)
may be I can send you a program. The program I build is current now based
on J3100 Japanese Mode, and I am tring to port it on NEC98 machine.
