I do not want to _ban1 men2 nong4 fu3_ ( move door and play axe )
but it is my impression that a lot people on this list are new
to chinese computing. And I hope this post is of help to them.

A lot of people are scared by the size of kc. But most people
do not need all the bells and whistles.I find that I only need
the following 14 files occupying only 860 KB to read and edit.
[ My pc is 386, vga[not supper vga], I use pinyin input method. ]

The second part of the post is a summary of how to read Big5 files.

How to read and edit BIG5 files:

  1. BIG5 editors for PC:

     You can get `kc' from
     moers2.edu.tw:/chinese-pub/chinese-sys/kc

There is another commercial package called 'et'.

You can view and edit on unix ( or possibly other mainframes )
when when you login from PC under chinese enviorment. It works
the same way as ZWDOS. But be sure :
     1) get an 8-bits clean telnet programs. You can get it from
     moers2.edu.tw:/chinese-pub/ncsa/{iii,itri,nctu,ncu}
You can select one of them. (certainly, nctu is preferred)
     2) stty pass8

  2. BIG5 viewers for PC:
shownews and readnews, check 'catalogue' ftp'able from
     ifcss.org:/software

  3. For workstation users with X window,
install cxterm with Big-5 code. cxterm is available from
     ifccs.org:/software/x-win/cxterm*

  4. BIG5 viewers for unix with graphic terminal:
chirk, readnews, check catalogue mentioned above

  5. There are programs to convert big5 to Postscript, such as hz2ps,
     news2ps, again check 'catalogue'.
