BADALONA, BARCELONA, Spain -- The Unified Team, using the strategy that
helped it upset the United States in the semifinals, beat China 76-66 on
Friday night to win the women's basketball gold medal.

The United States, the two-time defending champion, won the bronze medal,
beating Cuba 88-74.

The Unified Team made 14 of its first 19 shots to open a 30-16 lead 10:30
into the game. Except for a short lapse in the second half, China's press
was made ineffective by the Unified Team. The winners used a spread offense
and bigger players who passed the ball upcourt for higher percentage shots.

The same tactics were used by the Unified Team in its 79-73 semifinal
victory over the United States.

Leading by eight points at the half, the Unified Team upped its advantage
to 55-42 with 12:23 left on a drive by Elena Jirko. But China came back,
scoring 11 straight points capped by Zheng Dongmei's steal and a lay-up to
pull China within 55-53 with 9:44 to play.

Coach Evgueni Gomelsky, whose brother, Alexander, coached the Soviet Union
to the men's gold medal in 1988, called a timeout and the Unified Team was
soon back in control, leading 63-55 with 6:34 to play. China was never
closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Zassoulskaia, who scored 20 points in the Unified Team's upset victory over
the defending gold medal champion United States in the semifinals, came back
from an injury to her left hand in the second half to help the Unified team
hold off a Chinese rally. Zassoulskaia had left the game with 15:40 to go
after jamming two fingers but came off the bench to hit an inside basket and
two free throws to stop China's rally.

Zassoulskaia then made another field goal and a free throw as the Unified
Team upped its lead to 75-62 with a minute to play as China, needing points
in a hurry, continually misfired from the floor in the waning minutes.

Dongmei Li led China with 12 points and Shuping Zhan had 10. The Unified
Team made 15 of its first 20 shots and ran off 16 straight points in the
first half on the way to a 43-35 halftime lead.

Elena Bounatiantd added 15 points and Elena Khoudachova added 11 for the
Unified Team, representing the Soviet Republics excluding Latvia,Lithuania
and Estonia. Natalia Zassoulskaia, who had 20 points against the United
States, had 19 for the Unified Team, which shot 59 percent (30 for 51),
against China (3-2).

"This is the happiest day of my life, but it's also sad to think we'll
never play together again as a team," Zassoulskaia said, referring to each
republic competing on its own in future Olympics. "My heart is overcome
with joy. Our victory against the USA gave us the confidence to win this
game. The gold fulfills all our dreams."
