3. American Shot Putter Dasse Fails Drug Test at Olympics .............. 12
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Jian Liu
Source: DJ 8/8/92

American woman shot putter Bonnie Dasse on Saturday became the second
American athlete to fail a drug test at the Olympics in Barcelona. Dasse
tested positive for Clenbuterol, a banned substance.

American hammer thrower Jud Logan was expelled from the Olympics earlier
this week after also testing positive for using Clenbuterol.

Dasse didn't qualify for the finals in her event. She admitted using
Clenbuterol and said she stopped just before the Games.

Both Dasse and Logan said they were told that Clenbuterol was a safe
alternative to anabolic steroids. The drug was banned earlier this
year.

4. Profile: J-O Waldner, the World Table Tennis Star ................... 25
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Song Ling <ling@cgl.ucsf.edu> 8/8/92

The 27 years old Swede, J-O Waldner has become the first person in the
world to win the first place in all three major world table tennis
competitions: World Championship (1989), World Cup (1991), and the 25th
Olympics.

At the age 11, he started participating in table tennis competitions in
Europe. Later on he was sent to train in China with other top Swedish
teenagers. Although in both the 37th and the 38th World Championship games
the Swedes lost to the Chinese in the team competition (both 0:5), J-O was
the number one player in their overwhelming victory over the Chinese team
(5:0) in the 39th World Championship competition, and he further won the
singles title in the same game, hitting his personal peak form of his table
tennis career.

J-O's features are variable serves and sudden changes of the rhythem (he is
also a good tennis player which gives him good feelings of rhythem), as well
as a strong backhand. Like other European players (they usually have rather
long career life time), his peak form came a little late in his age. He
trains in Germany with other top Swedish players. They participate many more
competitions each year than their Asain counterparts.

Interestingly, J-O often loses in less well-known competitions but keeps
unbeatable in major world events, and he is usually the winner if the game
goes to the 5th set. (I don't remember if he lost any 5th set except to
Chen Xinhua in World Cup 1988.) What Chinese players can learn from the
Swedes is putting less emphasis on "closed-door training" and shift more
gears to international competitions, and to have their career time
prolonged; i.e. to retire a little later than they do now.
