Misioutine, Unified Team and Yukio Iketani, Japan, 9.787. Li had the only
triple back somersault of the competition. Vitali Scherbo of Unified Team,
one of the favorites, stepped out of bounds on his first series of
somersaults and finished sixth.

BADMINTON

Zhao Jian Hua lost another 3 setter. This time to the Indonesian Susanto.
The score of the last two set were both 17-14, with Zhao winning the 2nd and
losing the 3rd. It seems like ever since Zhao recovered from his disease, he
had not won a 3 set match. Now no Chinese is left after the 1/8 final stage.
This seem even more unbelievable than the volleyball news considering they
had three atheletes competing in badminton. There are still 4 players left.

There are some good news for China though. Li Yongbo/Tian Binyi advanced to
semifinal. Luckily, they will play a Indonesia pair instead of the South
Korean pair so they might have a chance to advance to the final. Both
Chinese women and both pairs advanced to the semi with straight set victories
except Huang Hua dropping a set.

In the mens singles allmost all the seeds won their groups and made it to
the second round. The only exceptions where Mikael Appelgren and Kim Song
Hui who lost to Paul Haldan and Steffen Feztner.

In the womens singles the four top seeds are all out. The highest seeded
player left in the tournament is Chen Zihe from China (who was my bet for
the gold).

The men among the 16 best and their world rank:

Gatien(1), Waldner(2), Persson(3), Grubba(4), Rosskopf(5), Saive(6),
Ma Wenge(7), Kim Taek Soo(8), Li Gun Sang(9), Yoo Nam Kyu(10),
Wang Tao(12), Primorac(14), Haldan(29), Fetzner(27), Ding Yi(19),
Prean(20).

The women:

Bhushnan(68), Frelih(64), Erlman(70), Gordon(67), Chen Zihe(6),
Chan Tan Lui(7), Chai Po Wa(9), Li Chun Li(52), Pratini(126),
Badescu(15), Hong Soon Hwa(16), Popova(40), Kim Hye Yong(28),
Vriesekoop(21), Hrachova(23), Timina(33).

In the mens doubbles the semifinal pairs are ready. In one semi Steffen
Fetzner and Jorg Rosskopf from Germany plays Kang Hee Chan and Lee Chul
Seung from Korea. Kang and Lee are two young promising korean players who
dropped Persson and Lindh from the doubbles. Unfortunately I have no info
on the other semi.

In the mens singles Waldner has allready made his way among the 8 best.
He will face Rosskopf who defeated Li Gun Sang 3-1.Jorgen Persson of Sweden
is also among the 8 best after a convinsing 3-0 victory against Fetzner of
Germany.

Valery Scherbo of the Unified Team Sunday established himself as the top
male gymnast in Olympic history.

Scherbo picked up four gold medals in individual apparatus to give him a
record six golds for the Games.

Scherbo's stunning performance overshadowed one U.S. bright spot - a gold
medal in the horizontal bar by Trent Dimas.

Dimas, of Albuquerque, defeated Grigory Misiutin of the Unified Team and
Andreas Wecker of Germany, who tied for the silver medal. No bronze medal
was awarded.

Scherbo won his record fifth overall gold medal in the men's vault
competition. He later won a gold in the parallel bars after winning in the
pommel horse and rings competition.

Grigory Misiutin of the Unified Team won the silver medal and Yoo
Ok-Ruyl of South Korea took the bronze in the vault.

Li Jing of China won the silver medal in the parallel bars and Guo Linyao
of China, Masayuki Matsumaga of Japan and Igor Korobchinski of the
Unified Team tied for the bronze.

Scherbo and Pae Gil Su of North Korea tied for the gold in the pommel
horse. Andreas Wecker of Germany won the bronze medal. Chris Waller of the
U.S. finished fifth.

Scherbo defeated China's Li Jing in the rings. Li Xiaoshuang of China and
Andreas Wecker of Germany tied for the bronze.

Li Xiaoshuang won the gold in the men's floor exercise.

Grigory Misiutin of the Unified Team and Yukio Iketani of Japan tied
for the silver medal in the floor exercise and no bronze medal was awarded.
