4. Deng, Qiao Win Table Tennis Doubles, Also in Singles Semi-Finals.......50

BARCELONA, Aug 3, Reuter - China's Deng Yaping and an injured Qiao Hong won
the women's doubles table tennis gold medal on Monday and booked places in
the last four of the Olympic singles tournament.

The diminutive Deng coaxed and cajoed her injured partner through their
21-13 14-21 21-14 21-19 victory over fellow- Chinese Chen Zihe and Gao Jun,
the world champions and top seeds.

Qiao twisted her right ankle seconds before the final was due to begin. She
collapsed sobbing at the edge of the playing area.

The ankle was strapped and the final delayed for 10 minutes while Qiao
composed herself in the changing room.	She was clearly in pain during the
match but Gao and Chen were in poor form and only looked potential winners
during the second game.

In the evening session Deng, ranked number one in singles, proved too wily
for North Korean Yu Sun in their quarter-final, winning 23-21 21-16 21-17.

Once considered too small for the Chinese team, Deng is constantly on the
move at the table, bobbing up and down and talking aloud to herself.

At crucial points, such as 20-20 in the first game, she took up to 20
seconds to serve, rubbing the ball round and round on her shirt and looking
Yu straight in the eye in an attempt to psyche her out.

In Tuesday's semifinals she will play South Korean Hyun Jung, who was on the
other side of the net earlier in the day in a doubles semifinal against Deng
and Qiao and won a bronze.

Hyun, the world number three, took much longer than expected to subdue
Romania's Emilia Ciosu, the only non-Asian player in the quarter-finals and
ranked a lowly 47.

Hyun won 21-9 18-21 18-21 21-11 21-14 and will have to improve markedly to
trouble the effervescent Deng.

Seeded second in the Olympic singles and doubles, Qiao looked fully
recovered from her injury as she coasted to an easy 21-13 21-10 21-14 victory
over Hong Kong's Chai Po.

Chen completed an unhappy day when she lost her quarter- final against North
Korea's Li Bun, ranked one place above her at five, 21-17 19-21 21-18 21-10.

China won all three women's singles medals in Seoul. Following a rule change
all four semifinalists are guaranteed a medal in Barcelona.

Since there is no women's plate shooting event in Barcelona, China's
twenty-two-year old female athelete, Zhang Shan, was allowed to compete
in this event. She defeated all her male counterparts and took the gold.

It was said that there will be a women plate shooting event in Atlanta
Olimpics in 1996. So Zhang will be the only female athelete in olympic
history to win the gold by defeat male competitors.

6. GAO Min: Took 2nd Olympic 3-meter Spring Board Diving Gold & Retires..105

BARCELONA, Spain (UPI) -- Gao Min of China, after again proving
unbeatable to the rest of the 3-meter diving world, finally gave in
Monday to an internal opponent.

Gao, in the strange position of not being in first place during
qualifying, survived a slow start to take her second Olympic 3-meter
gold medal in surprisingly easy fashion.

After keeping her winning streak of more than six years intact, Gao
announced her retirement from the sport because of nagging injuries.

"I feel that the fact that I even came to this Olympics was special,"
said Gao, who also won the 3-meter gold medal four years ago in
Seoul. "I have had a lot of injuries since the Asian Games (last year).
I felt I was going downhill and last year was a very difficult time."

One couldn't tell by the way she blew away the rest of the field at
the Piscina de Montjuic. She completed her 10 dives with a score of 572.
40 to win by nearly 60 points over the Unified Team's Irina Lachko.

"When she's on form, she's better than me," said Germany's Brita
Baldus, who took the bronze medal. "Gao Min trains very hard and
assiduously, which explains why she achieves these results. She wins
because she is in better form."

Gao has won every major international 3-meter event she has entered
since the 1986 world championships in Madrid. In addition to her two
Olympic gold medals, that string includes victories at the 1990
Gooodwill Games and the 1991 world championships.

In addition, she also took 1-meter titles at the Goodwill Games and
1991 world championships.

But winning the gold in Barcelona may have been her toughest fight.
Racked with injuries for a year, she still was nursing problems in her
back and left shoulder when she arrived in Spain.

"The last year has been very difficult for me," she said. "For
this Olympics I sacrificed a lot, especially physically."

Taking daily massages to ease the tightness, Gao still could do no
better than third in qualifying behind Lachko and Baldus, more than 25
points off the lead.

But Gao's coach, Xu Yiming, knew that it still would take a masterful
effort by somebody else to knock off his protoge in the final.

"Qualifying is not the final," he said. "All of them knew they
would have to come out and dive better in the final. I told (Gao) to get
a lot of rest -- eat well, sleep well and take care of her injured
shoulder. Then she would be ready to give her best performance."

Gao started slowly, but took the lead in the seventh round and
extended it with each of her final three dives. The only diver to post a
score above 70 in any round, she reached that level in each of her final
two dives.

She nailed an inward 2 1/2 somersault in the ninth round for the high
score of the event of 74.70, giving her a lead of 49.92 points over
Lachko. Gao likely could have simply jumped into the pool on her final
dive and still have won the gold medal.

Lachko earned the silver medal with a score of 514.14 points, and
Baldus took the bronze with 503.07. They were followed by
Czechoslovakia's Heidemarie Bartova with 491.49 points and American
Julie Ovenhouse at 477.84.

Surprisingly, Gao's first dive of the afternoon was subpar, as she
didn't get full extension on a forward 1 1/2 somersault. With a degree of
difficulty of only 1.6, she was scored at just 35.04 for the dive and
was in ninth place after the round.

At the end of three dives, she still hadn't move up past fifth.

"I saw that after the third round I was still down by 20 points,"
Gao said. "But I figured if I did each movement to my ability, I
couldn't be criticized."

Or beaten. She moved up to second after her fourth dive, an inward 1
1/2 somersault that earned three scores of 9.0 from the judges and was
computed to 54.18 points. For the next three rounds, she and Lachko
waged a battle for first place.

Gao produced the second-best dive of the fifth round, then came up
with the best marks of Nos. 6 and 7. Lachko kept pace until she opened
up too soon on a back 2 1/2 somersault and managed only a 37.80, giving
Gao the lead.

Ovenhouse moved up to second place with the best dive of the eighth
round, nailing a reverse 2 1/2 somersault with a 1 1/2 twist for a 69.60.
However, she fell apart in the final two rounds.

Her feet came apart while performing a back 2 1/2 tuck in the ninth
round, scoring only 52.92 points to drop to fourth place, then badly
overrotated an inverse 2 1/2 somersault on her last dive for a mark of 34.83.

Meanwhile, Gao and Lachko were 1-2 in each of the final two dives to
sew up the gold and silver medals.

After Gao built an insurmountable lead with her mark of 74.70 on the
ninth dive, she followed with a reverse 1 1/2 somersault with 2 1/2 twists
that was given a 73.950.
