                Some Questions and Answers about
                     China News Digest (CND)

                 From : Gang Xu (GXU@KENTVM.BITNET)

1). Who are the 'digesters'? Why are they digesting news?

We are a group of Chinese students from the Mainland, most of us are
science majored, with quite different experiences and most of us have
never met others before. But we all share a common goal when we work for
CND, that is to provide a fast and reliable information channel for the
people who are concerned of what is happening in China. And we found e-mail
to be an idea tool for doing so.

2). What kind of organization is ND? Is it a subordinate of IFCSS?

CND is hardly a formal organization, it is just an information group on
e-mail. We gather news and information about China and edit it into a nice
format and distribute it to our readers. Anyone with an e-mail account are
welcome to subscribe CND.

All of us are working for CND on purely voluntary basis. None of us gets
a penny for his CND work. When we need to make phone calls for ND, the
caller has to take care of his own phone bill.

ND is NEITHER a subordinate of IFCSS, NOR of any other organizations.
Our only boss is you, our readers . We report the activities of many persons
and/or organizations, not because we are for or against them, but
because, as we believe, that what they are doing now is influencing the
present and the future of China, and hence is of the concern and interest of
our readers.

3). From where CND gets the news? Can I redistribute the CND news?

ND gets its news mostly from volunteers' contributions. The editor
also monitor SCC, China-net and other e-mail groups for selection. ND
also welcomes contributions from our readers. The original authors and
contributors will always be acknowledged, unless they ask not to be
identified.

We highly appreciate it if you would share the news you get from CND
with your friends, by hardcopy or by e-mail. However, if you are
redistributing CND by e-mail regularly or to more than three people, we
ask you curtsey to contact us first, because that we have found a lot of
re-distributed mails got bounced back to us, causing complains from the
postmasters in our schools.

CND is open and free to all, and anyone can subscribe from us directly.
So in most of the cases there is no need for redistribution.

4). Can I join and leave ND freely? How?

Yes, anyone can join or leave ND at any time. All you need to do is to
send sign-on or sign-off message to:

         LISTSERV@ASUACAD.BITNET

    The sign-on message is:

         SUB CHINA-NN FIRSTNAME LASTNAME

    The sign-off message is:

         UNSUB CHINA-NN

All sign-on and off requests will be processed by computer
automatically. If you need personal assistance, please contact the following
persons:

    Gang Xu: GXU@KENTVM.BITNET
    Minghui Yao: YAOM@ASUCP1.BITNET

5). How many people are reading ND? Who are they?

Currently, there are about 3,000 addresses on our distribution list.
Among them, 1,000 from Canada and the other 2,000 from US, Europe and Far
East countries. It is hard to estimate the number of readers who read CND
from their local Bulletin Boards or by redistributions from their friends. A
total of 4,000 to 5,000 might be a close guess of the total readership.

The following is a rough estimation from the list maintainers: about 60%
to 75% of the readers are from the mainland, 20% to 25% are from Hong Kong
and Taiwan, about 5% are Americans and other nationals.

6). How can I help ND?

We would very much appreciate your help in the following ways:

a). Share ND with your friends who don't have e-mail access, by mouth
or by hardcopy, or you can introduce CND to more people.

b). Your comments and suggestions are always important to us. We depend
on the feedbacks from you to make our selections of news and information.

You can reach us by sending e-mail to the following persons:

    Gang Xu: GXU@KENTVM.BITNET
    Minghui Yao: YAOM@ASUCP1.BITNET

Or you can use the 'REPLY' key to send your message to CHINA-NN@ASUACAD,

which then will resend it to the Executive Editor of CND.

c). If you see any news or information about China, that is of general
interest, please send it to us to be shared by thousands more concerned
people.

d). If you would like to do more, you are welcome to join us and work
for CND on a regular basis. We need people to monitor more news sources and
also to serve as editors. About half of the working member of our group are
going to graduate in a couple of months, we need to get more new blood in.

The purposes of Federation of Overseas Hong Kong Chinese--Washington, D.
C. (FOHKC-DC) are: To promote the common good and social welfare of Overseas
HK Chinese in the metropolitan Washington, DC area; to foster friendship and
understanding with Overseas HK Chinese in other parts of the US; to aid,
promote, provide and conduct public discussion groups, forums, panels,
lectures or other similar programs on the development of democracy and human
rights in China and Hong Kong.

FOHKC-DC has been very actively responding to the pro-democracy movement
in China and the patriotic democratic movement in Hong Kong. Its activities
include participation of rallies and demonstrations protesting the current
Chinese government, press conferences voicing overseas Hong Kong Chinese's
deep concerns on the current situation in China, petitions urging the
British Government to take immediate actions to ensure the safety of all
Hong Kong citizens currently in China and to promptly authorize the Hong
Kong Government to provide asylum to those Chinese dissidents who seek
refuge in Hong Kong, and forums featuring notable visitors from Hong Kong.
FOHKC-DC is also one of the many organizations across the country that help
founding a national organization of oversea Hong Kong Chinese (2/90).
Continuing along this line, FOHKC-DC will work with other groups of Chinese
to support the long-term democratic movement in China and Hong Kong. We are
also planning to increase our lobbying efforts in the DC area.

Currently, we have over 50 members, most of them being professionals
(4/5) and students (1/5). We publish a biweekly newsletter in English and a
bimonthly journal in Chinese (Hong Kong Pulse).
