Special Issue on Immigration Affairs Regarding Chinese Students in Australia
(This issue is distributed to Australia only)

Foreword by the editor:
After US and Canada, Australia government recently announced its new
immigration policy toward Chinese students to protect them from possible
prosecution after Beijing Massacre. The announcement shows sympathy for
those Chinese students who joined the protest during the bloody Beijing
Summer and expresses just stand of Australia people, although the
announcement is still a little bit late and vague. From the experiences
of Chinese students in the US and Canada, there are still many for Chinese
students to do to protect themselves even if there is such a policy.
In this special issue, we include three articles from Australia and
hope our readers can think about something when reading this issue. By
the way, Chinese student organizations in the US and Canada are willing
and ready to introduce their expriences in lobbying foreign governments,
CND learned this after contacting those organizations under the request
from some students in Australia.

20,000 CHINESE STUDENTS MAY BE ALLOWED TO STAY IN AUSTRALIA
   -----------------------------------------------------------

Last night Australia Primary Minister Bob Hawke told to Channel Nine
TV. Network "The Current Affair" Program. He said 20,000 Chinese
students would be able to stay in Australia permanently.

Meanwhile Mr. Hawke mentioned that a special catalog would be created
in a immigrantion program for Chinese students here.

However, the Immigrantion Department spokeman said the figure which
Mr. Hawke pointed was too high. The spokeman complained it was unfair
for many Cambodian being refused to apply for political refugees.

The final dicision will come out from the Paliament House before
end of this month.

2. Chinese Students in Australia Need to Unite to Protect Themselves

Mr. Xiong,
Chinese students here need help from Chinese students in USA and Canada.
The Chinese students face the fate of future. The Australian will make a
dicision for the Chinese students who were legally in Aunstrlia before 20th
June.
There is an organisation called China support group which was organised
by Australian people. This group is trying to suggest Australian government
keep these Chinese students. You know those Chinese students here are quite
different from the students in USA and Canada. Most of them are language
students. The minority of them are learning science or engineering.
Up to date, there are about 10,000 students has applied PR states here.
>From Australian side, from my personal talking with immigration office, quite
number of high ranking offical have wishes to keep this students. It will
affect those studends who have made big noise in democratic movement.
If Australian goverment reject the Chinese student's applying PR, they
have to leave Australia before 31st Jan. 1991 according to the contract which
was made between Australian goverment and those students who have applied PR.
At that time, I was wondering what kind medication they want to sell. Some
of them do not really like Chinese Students. Like one of them said it is just
a kind of political game. They forgot they were exciting when they heard the
massacre in Tiananmen square. From some case, it is Chinese students fault. We
should show the Australian people we never forget the thing happen in China
June 4th 1989. What kind help do we need are: 1)How to propagate? 2)How to
unite the Australian people like China Support group? 3) How to over the
middle one? Could you introduce the ways the Chinese students (in USA and
Canada) used that to pursue the USA government to do what Chinese students
hope?
The Australian government will make dicision soon. The chinese students
here really need help and idea from you.
				Thank you!

Subject: RE: Chinese Students in Australia Asking for Help

Hi, Bo Xiong:
I got your message. The situation here is just like the letter (from
CND Reporter) illustrated: most of the students here are worrying about their
future.
It is a pity that Chinese students here are not really united. Everybody
is busy in earning his/her own money. The Australia news medium has noticed
that their argument about if there is a masscare in Tiananmen has been used by
Beijing. Chinese support group has called on a memoreal service on June 4 of
this year. However, I do not know any person around me will join it.
It is Friday again here. Have a nice weekend!
