This is an introduction to aus.culture.china (ACC).
The aim of ACC is to provide news to what's happening to the Chinese
nationals in Australia and those arround the world since massacre in Beijing.
We want to have a forum where Australians and Chinese nationals in Australia
can have free discussion about the Chinese culture and the current
politcial situation. We also post interesting news articles on China
here in this newsgroup. Those articles are from news sources around
the world. We hope to increase the
readership. The following introductory articles are written for distributions
of hard copies in the hope to get more and more people to access ACC. Your
time and effort in distributing hard copies would be greatly appreciated.

		*** What is aus.culture.china (ACC)? ***
		****************************************

'aus.culture.china (ACC)' is an electronic newsgroup created on AARnet &
ACSnet in May 1990. ACC is aimed to serve for news, information exchange,
discussions, debate on China/Chinese affairs for people in Australia.

ACC is an neutral newsgroup and is NOT attached to any political
organisations. ACC is not a moderated newsgroup, i.e., whatever you post will
be distributed across Australia. You can either participate in the current
discussions on ACC just by reading the news, or post articles/questions to
lead new discussions. You may direct ACC in any direction of your interests.

It is one of the best ways for the Chinese/China-concerned people to get
information and to communicate with each other.

Everyone is welcome to ACC. We particularly encourage the Chinese students
and scholars in Australia to participate in discussions on topics of their
interests. We also realised that many students have access to email but
may not have access to electronic news. If that is the case for you and
you wish to contribute articles to ACC then you can email them to
Anthony Lee (email address anthony@batserver.cs.uq.oz.au). Please specify
if you want to remain anonymous.

			*** HOW TO READ ACC NEWS? ***
			*****************************

To save new NEWS readers' time in finding out how to read news. Following is
an example of how to read 'VMS NEWS' (news on VMS system) for reference.
People may get help/advice
from your local system programmer/computing advisor(s) in your institution.

ACC is one of the hundreds of newsgroups currently available on
AARnet & ACSnet in Australia. To access ACC news you need a computer
account in your institution, and the computer should have access to
electronic news. If you are not sure ask you system programmer.
There are many news reading program, again ask you system programmer
if you are not sure. On unix systems, there is "rn" and "nn", you can
use the "man" (manual) command to find out about them.

AN EXAMPLE OF READING VMS NEWS:
*******************************
AT the prompt sign "$", typing in 'NEWS' will bring you in NEWS.

HELP is be available in NEWS. Answers to most NEWS related questions can be
found in the HELP.

NEWS in this place has three levels of windows: (1) a list of all registered
newsgroups in alphabetic order; (2) a list of current available news items in a
selected newsgroup; (3) contents of a selected news item in a newsgroup. A
carriage "RETURN" will bring you from levels (1) to (3) in most computer
systems, while "CLOSE" command will bring you from levels (3) to (1).

Like all newsgroups, news items on ACC can be read, extracted as a file to your
personal account, printed via your local printing facilities, and so on.
People can post articles to ACC from any account, or reply to a particular news
item. Of course, you can send a person-to-person e-mail to a particular news
post by using the e-mail address from the news item you are reading.

Once you are in the CONTENTS window in NEWS, commands including the followings
are available for your control of NEWS (in most places in Australia):

"NEXT" 	--- to read the next item of news;
"BACK"	--- to read the previous item of news;
"CLOSE" --- to close the current active window (you go to a higher level of
		windows in NEWS: (3) --> (1));
"REGISTER" --- to register a newsgroup;
"EXIT" 	--- to exit NEWS;

Notes:

"REGISTER"
**********
Registering newsgroups has advantages. The NEWS program will remember the news
items that you have read. In the NEWS window level (1) (list of registered
newsgroup) the number of unread news items will be shown; while in the window
level (2) the number of unread news items will be highlighted.

Registration of newsgroups can be done in a number of ways. You may type "reg
aus.culture.china" to register this group, or you may locate
"aus.culture.china" by using the up/down arrow "--->" (while you are in the
NEWS window level (1) (list of registered newsgroup)) and type "register (or
'reg')".

In this place,
command "DIR/ALL" in NEWS will show the list of all available newsgroups;
command "DIR/REG" will show the list of all registerred newsgroups;

**********
You may try the following steps if you wish:

(1) At the propt sign "$", type "NEWS",
	Wait for a movement (might be a few minutes depending on the speed of
		the system).
    	You'll likely get a list of all currently available newsgroups.
(2) Once you get the list, you can either
    (a) trace alphabetically to find "aus.culture.china" (this can be done by
	using the up/down arrows "--->" to locate the newsgroup);
		or
    (b) type "Register aus.culture.china" (if you get error signs here, such
	as "no such newsgroup available", then check your system
	programmer);

Notes:

(a) If you find aus.culture.china in the list of all newsgroups (widow level
    (1)), a carriage "return" will bring you into window level (2) for the
    list of current available items of news in aus.culture.china. The use
    the up/down arrows "--->" to locate the news item of your interest, a
    futher cariage "return" will bring you into the contents of that item of
    news (window level (3)).

    You may then use "NEXT", "BACK", "CLOSE" and "EXIT" etc. to enjoy in the
    NEWS and exit from it when you finish.

    For your convenience, you may register aus.culture.china. See the
    REGISTRER section.

(b) See the REGISTRER section and refer to notes on (a).
