1. FCSSC's Backyard Is on Fire
(FCSSC = Federation of Chinese Students & Scholars in Canada)
      ---------------
When a country is brutalized by a tyrant who demands patriotic
ardor from his oppressed subjects, the sense of the boundary
between good and evil disappears. -- Andrew R. Cecil
-----------------------------------------------------------------
From: Haosheng Zhou, hszhou@ee.ubc.ca

UBC, the FCSSC's stronghold, is on fire when a message appeared
in the LYH computer bulletin board, Zhong_Hua@cs.ubc.ca,
announcing that "A film reception is to be held for celebrating
Chinese National Day and Autumn Festival."

The sender of the message, Mr. Huo Enquan, is an infamous pro-CCP
activist arrived at UBC as a visiting scholar after the June-4th
massacre. He has been organizing movie shows on behalf of the
Consulate General of PRC in Vancouver since the beginning of this
year while the Consulate General refuses to provide Chinese
movies and any other aid to LYH.

Such a bold announcement stirred up a fierce response from LYH
members at UBC.

"You have stayed (lived) abroad long enough to compare the
achievements of CCP with Western societies'. As a visting
scholar, you should be intelligent enough to tell right and
wrong, i.e. Lipeng regime is against the people of China since it
ordered killing of the Chinese people," Mao Jiye wrote in his
response.

"Oct. 1st only makes me remember those who dies for China last
summer, their blood is still fresh, their mothers are still
crying," Wei Dongqing, the Chairman of LYH, commented in his
posting.

"The machine guns and tanks of June 4th have sounded the knell of
the so-called People's Republic of China. As a state, the
People's Republic of China is a rotting corpse, at least for me.
It's dead. I don't know anything which is worthy to celebrate,"
Xie Linchi said in his response. He added, "One of a few
occasions I have to use the phase 'the People's Republic of
China' is when I write letters home in case that they may be sent
to somewhere else."

The memory recalled by Mr. Huo Enquan is bitter ever.

UBC used to be a stronghold of CCP while Vancouver is an
important strategic place of CCP backed by the Consulate General.
Since June-4th last year, the pro-CCP LYH executive committee has
been recalled and new pro-democracy LYH executive committee was
elected. Since then, the activities of pro-CCP fraction have been
kept in low profile and the Consulate General has to resort to
those came after the June-4th last year.

Both FCSSC and Vancouver Society in Support of Democratic
Movement (VSSDM) are organising a lot of pro-democracy activities
near October the first, including a forum series on key issues in
China. Mr. Jiaqi Yan is going to give a seminar at UBC on
September 27, 1990 and to meet Chinese students at UBC.

A. Referencing News --Overseas Edition, Founded by Chinese
Liberal and Democratic Party

A newsletter was created by the Chinese Liberal and Democratic
Party (CLDP). It is named as "Referencing News (Can1Kao3
Xiao1Xi1) -- Overseas Edition". The newsletter carries major
news related to the democracy movement of China around the world.
Copies will be sent back to China by all the possible means.

Mr. Lin Wei, the Chief Staff of CLDP, suggested that this is
another attempt to break the news blockade imposed by the Chinese
Communist Party on Chinese people. The founders hope that this
newsletter will be able to supply some most important information
and news omitted by the news media controlled by CPC. In this
way, they may help Chinese people to make better judgement.

At the beginning, this newsletter is just a sheet of paper sizing
8.5X11. It can be easily concealed in a letter, so people can
mail them back. At the moment, because of the lack of funding, it
is published biweekly. In the future, it will be published at
least once a week. The fund for the first issue was mainly
donated by several members of CLDP.

CLDP, as the first opposition party, tries to do something really
effective toward mainland China. This newsletter is one of her
tries in that direction. It is wished that this work will be
widely supported by all the people who loves and cares about
China. Any help is welcome. For information, one may contact P.
O. Box 2044, Kenner, LA 70063. The telephone number is
(504)461-0369.

B. Cooperation Between the Russian and Chinese Opposition Parties
-- A meeting between Chinese Liberal and Democratic Party and
Russian Social Democratic Party.

The People's Deputy of Russian Federation, Secretary of the
Constitutional of Commition, the Presidium member of Social
Democratic Party (Russian) Mr. Rumyantsev Oleg met with Mr. Houqi
Chen, presently the head of the Chinese Liberal and Democratic
Party (CLDP) last August at Univ. of Illinois.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is the first opposition Party
in Russia. The party is widely suported by the army and the
general public. The Party chairman Yelsin is the elected
president for USSR. SDP has paid a close attention on the
development of the Chinese democracy movement since its
establishment this year. SDP had wished to establish a
relationship with the opposition party in China. When the party
delegation, which had a trip for observation and visit in United
States, heard the newly founded CLDP as the first opposition
party in China, it immediately asked for this meeting.

During the talk, Mr. Oleg introduced the progress and experience
of the SDP for the Russian democracy movement since 1985 to Mr.
Chen. Both of them discussed the future mutual support and
cooperation. They all expressed that, as the first meeting
between the two opposition parties, it is a good start for the
future friednship and cooperation. Finally, Mr. Oleg warmly
congratulated the found of the CLDP and invited the CLDP to send
delegates to Moscow for visiting and observation in the future.

C. Condumn the ignorance of human rights by the Soviet Union.

Last month, the authorities of the Soviet Union sent the Chinese
pilot, who flew out China on a jet fighter to USSR, back to
China. the Chinese Liberal and Democratic Party has condumned
such a way of dealing with one's right and wish of freedom.
