Doctor Urges Li Lu to End Hunger Strike

Five days into the hunger strike in support of the renoun prisoners of
conscience Wang Juntao and Chen Ziming, Li Lu underwent medical tests at
Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, after suffering from chest pain
and diarrhea this morning. Doctors tried unsuccessfully to persuade Li Lu to
end the hunger strike, noting that his pulse had fallen to a dangerous level
of 43 beats per minute. A normal person's pulse ranges from 70 to 90 beats
per minute.

Li Lu showed up at 8:30 pm to resume his hunger strike. Apparently undaunted
by the doctor's warning, he vowed to continue fasting as long as Wang/Chen
continue their hunger strike. In a rather cheerful but soft voice, he talked
to the IFCSS members and friends who have gathered to check on his condition.

Li Lu, a Tiananmen Square leader, is now a graduate student at Columbia
University. During a protest rally in front of the Chinese Embassy in
Washington, D.C. last Saturday, he spoke of his intention to stage a parallel
hunger strike with Wang Juntao and Chen Ziming, who are serving a 13-year
prison term in the Beijing No.2 Prison. Since April, Wang and Chen have been
held under solitary confinement, and are known to be suffering from serious
illness without adequate medical attention. Li Lu thinks that his parallel
hunger strike will enable the outside world to visualize the life-threatening
conditions of Wang and Chen.

Several friends, including fellow Tiananmen Square leaders Xin Ku
(now at Yale Univ) and Bai Meng (Princeton Univ), as well as Ge Xun
(Texas A&M Univ) came to Washington as soon as they heard the news
of Li Lu's hunger strike. "I came down to Washington on Monday to be
with Li Lu. I wanted to join the fasting, but Li Lu suggested that
I should rather stay and help with other things," said Mr. Xin Ku.
Instead he settled for a symbolic hunger strike on Monday and Tuesday.
He said he will stay with Li Lu till the end of the hunger strike.

The end of the hunger strike is not in sight. As the night sets in,
the three Tiananmen leaders fold away the chairs and the tent to
retreat to a hotel one block away from the Embassy. They will be back
in the morning to continue the protest.

Asked if he has any messages to the Chinese community, Li Lu says:

"Yes, I would like them to remember those who are suffering in China. People
have a natural tendency to forget, and this is inevitable. However, there is
an important principle to remember."

"If you allow injustice to go on, you are in effect encouraging more
injustice. We must stand up to injustice with firm determination to fight it.
I would like all Chinese people to remember this."

Li Lu is drinking water and fruit juice only. Although he declined to follow
the doctor's suggestion to stop the hunger strike, he did agree to go back to
the hospital immediately if his pulse falls below 40 beats per minute, or if
he ever feels faint for more than 1 hour. Prospect of such a hospital visit
is growing with each long day under the sun in front of the Chinese Embassy.
Fortunately, the heat of the usual Washington summer has died down since early
August, and may not add to the declining physical condition of this "true
pro-democracy fighter".
