 OPEN SADHNA SATSANG, USA

Param Pujyaniya Maharajji conducted the first-ever Open Sadhana Satsang in the USA from 14 to 17 May 2009. Over 500 devotees converged to seek spiritual solace and strength through Ram Naam, away from the opulent materialism which fills everyday life in America. For three days they were treated to a feast of deep meditation, beautiful bhajans, incessant jaap, contemplative maun and, above all, Param Pujyaniya Maharajji’s blessings and pravachans. Sadhaks came from different states of America, from nearby New York and Maryland to faraway California and Texas. They also came from Canada, the United Kingdom and even Australia. A mix of elderly and young, men and women, students and retirees, they all enjoyed a blissful retreat.

Param Pujyaniya Maharajji arrived in the US on 12 May 2009 after a brief stopover in London where he conducted Amritvani Sankirtan and Pravachan. A large number of devotees received the gift of Naam Diksha. The same afternoon Param Pujyaniya Maharajji proceeded onwards to the US and was received lovingly by a large number of sadhaks on the evening of 12 May 2009.  Upon arriving at the venue of the Satsang at the campus of the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, Pujyaniya Maharajji was taken to a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Dakshinamurti, considered to be the first teacher of Vedic knowledge. The Gurukulam provided the perfect setting for the historic, first-ever Open Sadhna Satsang taking place in the USA.

The Satsang commenced on the morning of 14th May in a hall filled with a peaceful ambience and adorned with pictures of Swami Satyanandji and Pujyaniya Premji Maharaj. Quotations from Shri Amritvani and Shri Bhakti Prakash decorated the walls. Purposive discipline filled the hearts of the sadhaks who had gathered, including many who had received Naam Diksha only the previous evening. Many felt that the daily routine of dhyan, jaap and maun which was followed over the next three days was reminiscent of the rigor associated with Sadhana Satsangs at Haridwar. Devotees experienced deeply powerful divine vibrations and blessings and many felt emotional. Meals were partaken at the Gurukulam’s kitchen and volunteers were amazed at the punctuality, discipline and spirit of service of the sadhaks taking part in the Satsang. The three days of the Satsang elapsed too quickly and on the morning of 17th May, when the Purti took place, everyone’s heart was filled with joyfulness as well as the pangs of being wrenched away from the spiritual communion which they had enjoyed so much.

Param Pujyaniya Maharajji’s discourses on managing emotions, filling oneself with love, on the supreme merit of Ram Naam, surrender to the Divine Will, on the virtues of humility, forgiveness, compassion and tolerance found a deep resonance among the sadhaks. Taking place in the busy, materialistic context of America, the Sadhana Satsang came across as a deep spiritual experience which will forever be cherished by the sadhaks who had the good fortune to attend it.

A very large number of Sadhaks took the opportunity to seek Param Pujyaniya Maharajji’s darshan, with each individual or family spending a few rare moments. So deep was the effect of the Satsang that not one mentioned any materialistic concern or anxiety, which is commendable, given the depth of the current economic recession and uncertainty.

On 18 May 2009, Sri Swami Viditatmananda, one of the Gurus of the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam and a disciple of Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswati, the founder of the Gurukulam, called upon Param Pujyaniya Maharajji to bid farewell. A very large number of sadhaks came to the New Jersey airport to convey their gratitude and bid a tearful and emotional farewell to Param Pujyaniya Maharajji, taking with them lasting and loving memories of the Satsang and deeply grateful for the privilege of being able to attend it.
