The News Research team at the Express-News is looking forward to your visit
to San Antonio in June for the Special Libraries Assn. conference. We want
you to have a great time in San Antonio.

Over the coming months I will provide you with information that will help
you plan your visit. I thought I would format the information as a FAQ.
Send me your questions and I will post answers to the group.

When should I arrive in San Antonio?

Jody Habayeb has posted a preliminary program of events that start with an
Open House here at the Express-News on Saturday June 9 (4:30-7). We do not
have a news library - our team and our resources are integrated into the 3
floors of the newsroom - so there is not much to tour. However, we look
forward to showing off our intranet and our new NICA/MediaStore digital
photo archive (that is being installed this week.) The hospitality suite
will be open that evening as well. An excellent CE workshop is planned for
Sunday.

Besides Fiesta which happens in April, one the most fun events in San
Antonio will be taking place this same weekend. The Texas Folklife Festival

is being held on the HemisFair grounds which are situated downtown by the
convention center, and very near the convention hotels June 7-10. The
festival includes stages located throughout the grounds and feature all
types of ethnic and cultural entertainment showcasing the history and
accomplishments of 27 ethnic groups that settled Texas. There is dancing
and music, great food and crafts. If you like this kind of event - you may
want to plan to arrive on Friday or early Saturday to leave time to attend.
If you weren't planning to attend the CE, you could enjoy the Festival on
Sunday.

What things should I plan to do while I'm in San Antonio?

Besides the RiverWalk and the Alamo, there are many other historic or
interesting places to visit in San Antonio. Here are two websites to give
you some ideas:

Should I consider bringing my family with me to San Antonio?

By all means, bring your spouse and children. This is a great town for
families. We have 3 major theme parks including one of the best waterparks
in the world:

* Sea World http://www.seaworld.com/seaworld/sw_texas/swtframe.html

* Fiesta Texas Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a 200-acre theme park
offering rides, a water park and musical shows.

* Schlitterbahn http://www.schlitterbahn.com/

What will the weather be like?

It will be hot - probably in the mid-90s. I wouldn't rule out rain, but it
is rare in the summer here. People dress casually here, although everything
is air conditioned, so a jacket would be convenient too. Bring a bathing
suit - all the hotels have outdoor pools.

Stay tuned for The Road to San Antonio, Part 2. I will give you some
suggestions for hotels which are near the hospitality suite. I can also tell
you about some Bed & Breakfast places in another email.

See you in June!
