Based on my observations and research of where this is taking us—with a news business overlay—I'm going to take you through some side-by-side comparison of how we work now and how I think we'll be working in the future.
Archives—an eye-glazing term.
Minimal metadata—and not very well organized at that. Most of it built on the fly
Schema—taxonomies: a way of aggregating metadata intelligently, and minimizing human input
'Don't annoy users' Institutional discipline: sometimes translated as "best practices." It's a well known phenomenon among archivists that highly creative users generally produce messy files and metadata—particularly true if you expect to get any use out of an XML workflow.
