* We get lots of calls from
readers asking when a certain recipe ran in the paper. Because we don't archive
wire stories, we were always leafing through the paper to find the recipe. To
save time, we created a "Recipe Index" in our internal SAVE archive.
Each week a librarian adds the name of the recipe and the page number. Not only
has it saved time in the library, but it has helped our Features department,
too.
* We were answering the same
reference questions over and over, i.e. Who was mayor
in 1973? Who was police chief in 1928? etc.... It took
a little time to compile, but we created lists of all our past governors,
mayors, police chiefs, fire chiefs, and other assorted lists and posted them on
our intranet.
