LINC Instructions

If these instructions do not work, don't automatically assume it's your fault -- there may be something wrong with our account that we need to know about. If you can't get in to LINC, please tell someone in the News Research Department.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAC USERS

(Please see below for PC instructions.)

Important note -- When using LINC on a MacIntosh, the F keys will not work. You'll have to click on Function Keys at the top of the screen and then click on the F key you wish to use.

1. Click on the LINC icon. (This icon may be on your desktop, under the apple menu, or on your hard drive. If you can't find it in any of these places, you can find it in the "For Reporters" folder in the ~News Research folder on the QPS server.

2. Click on OK when you see the warning message that says "Not enough memory for text bitmap".

3. At the opening screen, tab three times to get to the application field and type NCTB and press Enter.

4. Type in your userid at the next prompt and press Enter.

5. Type in your password at the next prompt and press Enter. The current password for the xxx account is xxx.)

6. When you see the word READY on your screen, type in LINC and press Enter. If the computer asks you if you wish to print something just type N and press Enter.

7. Wait. The first screen you see should be a "most recent additions" page. This screen lists some of the most recent files loaded on LINC. If you run into three asterisks (***) along the way, press Enter.

8. Eventually you'll arrive at the LINC menu. Type 3 to get to the generic report menu. You'll have to use the LINC manual (or the online guide) to find the variable number.

9. After you choose the variable you want, you must choose a place. This could be as small as a block number or as large as NC. Most of the time you'll want counties or municipalities in NC.

10. When you are viewing a file and wish to print it, just click on FILE and then click on Print Screen. Only the screen you're seeing will be printed - not the whole file.

11. Once you have finished your research, use the appropriate keys, usually F3, to return to the main menu. Type in 99 and press Enter to leave the menu.

12. At the READY prompt, type in logoff and press Enter. Then choose File and Close Connection to leave Telnet3270.

* IMPORTANT NOTES *

Remember, the F keys on a MacIntosh won't work in LINC -- you must use the F keys under the "Function Keys" menu at the top of your screen.

If you have a problem getting into LINC and think LINC might be down, call the state's computer center helpdesk at 872-8841 and ask if NCTB is down. (NCTB is the application we use to get to LINC.) On the other hand, if you can get into NCTB but can get past the userid or password prompt, please see Sperry.
