Wake County Database

The Wake County database gives you access to the county's property, tax, and financial records, board of elections' records and register of deeds' information. Wake County has four lines available for remote access. If for some reason a line is busy, hang up and try another line. The instructions you receive will be the same for all four lines. The Wake County Database is often taken down late in the afternoon (after 5) for data entry/updates (remember, you're dialing right into their computer), but otherwise it is available 24 hours a day, every day.

If you cannot connect with these instructions, contact someone in the News Research Department. It may be that the system is down and cannot be accessed.

Description

The following is a list of what we have access to in the Wake County Database, and a brief description of each.

Connecting

On a Mac

On a PC

  1. If you have a modem, start Procomm Plus or other communications software. Dial any one of the four Wake County lines.
  2. Wait about 25-30 seconds, until a connection is made (you should hear a beeping sound when it connects).
  3. Press: (ENTER) . (ENTER) (that's the ENTER key, then a period, then the ENTER key).
  4. The computer will then ask you a series of questions. Here are the answers:
  5. The computer will then proceed to the County Master Menu. This is where you choose which part of the database that you would like to access.

    To access Property Records:

    1. Type 1 in the field for Assessor/Inspections and press ENTER.
    2. If the next screen is not blank, press CTRL C (hold down the Control button while pressing the letter "c") to clear the screen. Do this as many times as necessary to get an absolutely blank screen.
    3. In the blank screen type cssn to sign on and press ENTER.
    4. The next prompt will ask for your name and password; for name type: public, then press the Tab button (not ENTER!) and type public for your password. At the next screen type cmnu , the password for the Property Records file.

Choose the correct Real Estate Master File according to the way you wish to search -- you may search according to account #, ownership, parcel #, address, or PIN #. The most common way to search is by ownership or by address. You may also search the Abstract Property Listing Statements in the same way.

    1. To search by ownership, type B. At the next screen, enter the last name and then first name of the person you are searching for and press ENTER. You will then be given the list of names that most closely match the name you have entered.
    2. To search by address, type D. At the next screen you will be given a template to fill in with the address of the property being researched. An example of an address search will be to the left of the template for you to go by. Be sure to tab after each entry instead of pressing ENTER.
    3. To go forward in the list press ESCAPE 1. To go backward in the list press ESCAPE 2.
    4. Choose the person or address in the list by typing the corresponding line number and ENTER.
    5. The next screen will give you general information about the property. Your cursor will appear at the bottom of the screen on the first of four question marks - ????. This is where you type the code for what screen you want to see next. The most commonly searched items are:
        O - Ownership History
        S - Perimeter Sketch
        B - Building Data
        L - Land Data
        COMS - Comparable Sale Data
CENS - Census and Marketing Data
You may also type help at the ???? to see a list of the screens available.

Once in another screen, you must 'back out' of that screen to exercise your next option. To do this, type CTRL C.

*NOTE: Any command that reads with a PF, such as PF1 or PF2, can be performed by pressing ESCAPE and that number. Instead of pressing PF1 or F1, press ESCAPE 1.

*NOTE: If your machine locks up during a function and beeps when pressing any key, press CTRL R to reset.

At the bottom of the screen, type in the name of the person or institution being searched, or the book or page number being searched. Then choose the function that you would like carried out, press the corresponding number and then press ENTER.

    4. The next prompt will ask for your name and password;
for name type: xxx then tab and type xxx for your password. At the next blank screen, type F100 to get the menu for financial records.
    5. At the next screen choose 2 (by pressing Escape 2 ) for the Online Famis Main Menu.
    6. In this menu, the most useful option is 5 ( Escape 5 ), the Financial Inquiry option.
    7. After pressing Escape 5, choose either Escape 1 or Escape 2 . Either screen will show the Vendor Inquiry option that you need.
    8. Choose Escape 3 for the Vendor Inquiry screen and a screen entitled Vendor Titles-Alpha-Selection will appear.
    9. Press ENTER for Alpha Search. When you press Enter, a list of vendors will immediately appear on your screen beginning with A.
