RALEIGH-DURHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT This file contains: I. Airport History II. General Information and Statistics and 1997-1998 statistics for the following: III. Passengers IV. Cargo V. Takeoffs and Landings VI. Parking *************************************************************** I. HISTORY The birth of commercial aviation came on May 1, 1943 when Eastern Airlines inaugurated passenger service with two flights a day as part of its service from New York to Miami. To accommodate the service, a temporary passenger terminal was constructed with materials from four army barracks, left over from the airport's days as a US Army Air training support facility during WWII. Eastern was the sole air service provider until 1947, when Capital Airlines (forerunner of United) began service, followed the next year by Piedmont. Eastern brought the jet age to RDU in 1965, and, in 1970, Delta joined Eastern, Piedmont, and United in serving RDU. Almost immediately following deregulation of the domestic airline industry in 1978, Allegheny Airlines (later absorbed by USAir) began serving the region. To keep up with the growth, the Authority began work on a $50 million expansion program which included the 1982 opening of Terminal A and the development of a 10,000-foot runway which opened in 1986. Just as the improvements were completed PanAm came to RDU in 1983, followed by TWA in 1984. American began service in 1985 and later made RDU one of its regional hubs. In 1987, American began service out of the newly constructed Terminal C. In 1988, American introduced European non-stop service with a daily flight to Paris. It discontinued Paris in 1994, but began a London-Gatwick route out of RDU in 1994. In April 1993 Northwest began service to RDU followed by Air South in 1994 and ValuJet, Continental, Midway, and Midway Connection in 1995. Midway established RDU as its primary hub and the Triangle as its corporate headquarters. Air Canada became the first foreign carrier to serve RDU in November 1996. *************************************************************** II.
