We will capitalize North Raleigh, West Raleigh, East Raleigh, South Raleigh and Southeast Raleigh. (I'm not ready to stretch this capitalization binge to northwest, northeast and southwest Raleigh.) This reflects the wide use of these terms by residents and city officials. This changes the N&O stylebook entry on REGIONS. Southeast Raleigh refers roughly to the southeast quadrant of the city, extending from downtown and bounded by New Bern Avenue on the north and by Wilmington Street on the west. It includes neighborhoods outside and inside the Beltline. It is roughly equivalent to Raleigh City Council District C. These are all rather broad terms, and it is best in your writing to refer to specific street addresses or to neighborhoods. Just be sure that you have the right neighborhood. Perhaps this next part goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. We should avoid stereotypes about the people and vague, lazy descriptions of the neighborhoods in these areas of the city. Not everyone who lives in North Raleigh is affluent or conservative, and only some streets in some Southeast Raleigh neighborhoods could be described as poor or run-down. In Durham we will continue to capitalize terms such as East Durham and North Durham. If you still don't know about the N&O stylebook, please check it out on the NRD page. Or if you prefer an updated printed copy, just let me know and I'll get one for you.
