Whew! My first solo issue of News Library News is finished. Many
thanks to everyone who has offered articles, advice, help and words of
encouragement!
This issue is packed with great articles. A common theme running through
several of them is echoed in Debra Bade's Notes from the Chair:
creating partnerships among colleagues and organizations. From conference
recaps to new members and panel discussions to poetry events, News Division
members are continually engaging in cross-promotions and partnerships.
Speaking of partnerships, I was contacted recently by Alisson Walsh of
HowStuffWorks (www.howstuffworks.com).
In case you haven't seen it, HSW is a great web site with tons of useful
reference information (and it's also just plain fun). If you're interested
in setting up syndication and content usage agreements for your news organization
or library, you can contact her at alisson.walsh@howstuffworks.com.
Changes in NLN
There are some changes starting with this issue of NLN. Due to increased
involvement in her local SLA Chapter, Laura Mann is no longer doing
the Technology Tips column. Thanks for all of your hard work, Laura! If
anybody is interest in carrying on this useful column, please let me know.
There is a new column: Intranets. Jalyn Kelly will be taking a
look at the content, marketing strategies and technologies that news libraries
are using to create and maintain their intranets. Featured in this issue
is the Sun-Sentinel's wonderful intranet. Hopefully this will be
a great way to share ideas and pick up lots of new tips.
Also starting is an occasional feature in which new members introduce
themselves. With almost 800 members in the Division, it's hard to get
to know everyone. In an effort to introduce and welcome people to the
Division, Membership Chair Sammy Alzofon and I asked the newcomers
to contribute something about themselves. After all, part of what makes
the News Division so interesting and helpful is getting to know people.
So learn a little bit about your new colleagues, and say hello if you
see them around a News Division event in the future!
Happy reading, and happy holidays!
