As the tragedy of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC continues to unfold, our deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to our friends and colleagues who have been affected by these horrific events. Please know that our thoughts continue to be with you. -- Kathryn Pease

On August 1, Jerry Brown, Director of News Research at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, retired after 27 years at the paper. Jerry started out at the Akron Beacon Journal in 1962, and in 1974 he started as a Librarian at the Post-Dispatch under Nancy Stoddard. In 1985, he became Director of News Research. Charles Shipman, also of the Post-Dispatch research center, had this to say: "Jerry shepherded the technological revolution under four editors and five managing editors in St. Louis, and took us from an all manual clips library to a (mostly) digital research operation. On a personal note, he's been a great teacher and a great friend, and I wish he'd stay another 27 years. He's a lucky man, retiring on his own terms, fit as a fiddle and ready to enjoy the easy life."

Shortly after taking over for Jerry as the News Research Director at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Charles Shipman announced he is relocating to the East Coast. Charles's wife was offered a job that was just too good to pass up, so they are moving to New Hampshire.

News Library News's Managing Editor, Leigh Poitinger, was promoted to the position of News Library Director at the San Jose Mercury News in August.

On September 10, Justin Scroggs, formerly of Time Inc.'s research center, joined the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as Manager of both their text archiving group and their Stacks Information Service group which provides research to the public. Ginny Everett, the AJC's News Research Director, reports that on September 11 Justin was drafted into research service for a few days.

Susan M. Kaufman, Director of the Knowledge Center at Manning Selvage & Lee in New York, is currently on the faculty of Quinnipiac University in the School of Communications in Hamden, Connecticut. She continues her affiliation with NYU as an adjunct faculty member in the Management Institute.

Charlie Campo of the Bangor Daily News has been appointed to the Maine Library Commission by Maine Governor Angus S. King, Jr. Additionally, the BDN's publisher, Rick Warren, recently named Charlie as co-chair of the task force created to coordinate the newspaper's conversion from a 54-inch to a 50-inch web.

Robert Britton has been promoted from Deputy Manager to Manager of Research Operations for the People Group of magazines at Time Inc. in New York, where he oversees library services for People, Teen People, People en español, In Style, Real Simple and Who Weekly (the Australian version of People) magazines. Prior to joining the staff of People in 1994, he was a librarian at the San Francisco Chronicle for six years. A native of Torrington, Conn., Bob is a graduate of Colby College and earned a master's degree in library science from Simmons College. His library career began in Maine, where he worked for 14 years at the Portland Public Library (in every capacity from tech services clerk to acting assistant director) and for two years at the Maine State Library, managing the talking books program and coordinating the state institutional libraries.
