I am a second-year MLS student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in the School of Library and Information Science.
I am originally from Syracuse, New York, and am one of four daughters. I live in Carrboro, North Carolina, with my husband of two years, Jamie Bort.
Some of my hobbies include collecting books, playing classical guitar, cooking, gardening, and bicycling.
I have just finished my third semester of coursework, and am enjoying the grad school experience. When I began last Fall, I wasn't sure where I wanted to focus, but through a process of learning and exploring, I have become increasingly interested in digital collections. I have held multiple internships during my time at SILS, and have gained a variety of experience including database design and maintenance, cataloging and creating MARC records, linux server administration, and web design and instruction. I am interested in systems analysis and administration, web design, and digital collections. When I graduate, I hope to find myself in a cutting-edge environment, where I can continue to learn new languages and technologies. I am especially interested in dynamically-driven web design techniques such as AJAX and XML. I have already started work on my Master's Project, which will be the design and creation of a platform for a small digital library of storytelling materials, hosted by ibiblio.org.
I have created this site using CSS, XHTML, PHP, The Gimp, and Javascript. Thanks to Marc Grabanski for the lovely fish-eye menu widget. Also featured throughout the site are some of my earlier CSS designs (see Information Resources and Services and Advanced Internet Applications.). Apart from the fish-eye widget, all of my code has been done by hand. I like to use Vi in the Unix environment on the web-server, but also sometimes use Notepad and Notetab++.
