Human Resources Office, School of Medicine, UNC-CH- Access Database
>>
During my time at the HR office, I converted a legacy Microsoft Excel spreadsheet into a Microsoft Access relational database, for use in keeping track of staff and faculty appointments, promotions, research, and grants. It contained approximately 500 records, and was growing steadily by the time I moved on.
Information Resources and Services- Pathfinder Website
>>
Brief course description: "Analysis, use, and evaluation of information and reference systems, services, and tools with attention to printed and electronic modes of delivery. Provides a foundation in search techniques for electronic information retrieval, question negotiation, and interviewing." My final project for this class was a
pathfinder website on global warming in the southeastern United States. The CSS is available
here.
Systems Analysis- Term Project
>>
Brief course description: "Introduction to the systems approach to the design and development of information systems. Methods and tools for the analysis and modeling of system functionality (e.g., structured analysis) and data represented in the system (e.g., object-oriented analysis) are studied."
In this class I worked on a semester-long group project, where we analysed the use of the trouble ticket system RT by the SILS lab staff. Over the course of the semester we conducted interviews with lab staff and management as well as conducted a survey of SILS faculty and staff, and produced data models based on this information. We also analysed the software and based on our findings produced a list of criteria used to score possible alternative programs. We gave a powerpoint presentation of our findings at the end of the semester. Our recomendations were ultimately accepted and put into use by the SILS lab. See our
final paper, complete with UML Models, Website Models, and Workflow Model.
Brief course description: "Study of design and implementation of state-of-the-art Internet applications. Example topics include multimedia authoring tools, dynamic content generation techniques, and server side configuration and programming."
For this class I created a website displaying 6
labs, created in various languages including Javascript, PHP, Perl, and XML. For the term project, I created a dynamically generated
RSS feed for ibiblio.org's newest collections, as well as assisted a team mate with the migration of ibiblio web content into a new PHP-based template. See the writeups
here and
here.
The website where the labs are displayed was designed for an earlier class. See the
CSS stylesheet.
