In politics also, a tragic death in one's career doesn't seem to hurt (image-wise) at any time, as we learned from the Kennedys. John Kennedy proved the following equation true in 1963:
  Public
Perception
Before
  Event   Public
Perception
After

John Kennedy Mediocre
President
+ tragic death = Great
President

And five years later, Bobby proved this one:
Bobby Kennedy Mediocre
Presidential
Candidate
+ tragic death = Great
President

Compare these results with their brother Ted, who since narrowly avoiding a tragic death in 1969 when he drove off of the Chapaquiddick Bridge, has remained far less popular than his late brothers.
