Vedanta

The major philosophical schools which have accepted the authority of the Vedas, are: Sankhya, Yoga, NyAyA, Vaisesika, PurvamimAmsa and Vedanta. Buddhism and Jainism which are also part of Indian philosophy fall outside this group as they do not acknowledge the authority of the Vedas.

The Vedanta system comprises of several schools which have arisen as a result of different interpretations offered by exponents of the Upanishads, the Vedanta Sutra and the Bhagwad Gita - the triple foundation of Vedanta. The principal ones among them are the Advaita of Sankara, the Visistadvaita of Ramanuja and the Dvaita of Madhva.

For a look at some of the differences in interpretation between Advaita and Visistadvaita see a comparative interpretation of Tat Tvam Asi.
