Dear Srimathy Srividya Mukund :
I am happy to know that you are
enjoying
the postings on the Dharma Saastrams .
It is a thoughtful kaimkaryam by
Sriman DeevalUr NVS Swamy .
These dharma Saastrams have been
blessed to us with Maharishis of
great Wisdom to bring happiness
to people and societies living
a harmonious life and contributing
to the well being of the nation .
The genius behind the rules of the dharma
Saastram
provides order and exquisite but not stifling
protocol
to conduct one's life free of strife . Things
ofcourse
change and in Kali Yugam dharmam wanes . Inspite of
it all , the dharma Saastrams have to be studied
to understand the compassion and piety of
the Maharishis , who blessed us with them
as
a road guide to harmonious , strife free
living
and helping each other as productive members
of a large and complex hierarchy abiding
by
Vedic injunctions .
In answer to your second question ,
Yes , SaaLagramams are usually small to
medium
sized silAs from Gantaki river , Nepal .
Salagramams
having the size of coconut are occasionally found
.
Total SaaLagrama ArchA Moorthys like those of
Lord
Ranganatha are made up of many SaaLagramams (
small
and medium size ) and thru special binders
and oils
( Thailam) are held together . Some are
self-manifested ones
and the others are consecrated by Rishis or humans
following
Aagama Saastram .
The Moolavar Oppiliappan is not made of
SaaLagramams.
The original Silaa came from Mailam Quarries near
Dindivanam , drawn by multiple bullock carts to
the dhivya dEsam of Oppiliappan
Sannidhi
and sculpted right there last century , consecrated
and
worshipped . The most beautiful Moola BhEram
of
Oppiliappan replaced the svadhai ( as at the
dhivya desam of
ThiruttaNkaal near SivakAsi) image that was in
worship at
that time . Aagama rules recommend installation and
consecration
of the images of the Lord in metal, stone ,wood and
other
material and instruct us that the Lord enters the
BhErams
after consecration and it is a terrible to sin to
view such
consecrated images as a mere stone or metal or
piece of
wood . Moola Bheram ( stationery ArchA
Moorthys) are
the source of power and their power is transferred
to
the Moving deitys ( Uthsavar) thru special
Aagamic
rituals just as in the case of the Moolavar at
Thirumala
whose Power is transfered to BhOga
SrinivAsan
during the daily AarAdhanam
.
