Devotional hymns
ANNAMACHARYA ON LORD NARASIMHA AT AHOBILAM: Dr. M.S. Ramesh and Dr.
M.S. Rajajee; published by Sri Ahobila Math, Hyderabad - 500013. Rs.50.
THE FASCINATION of Narasimha Avatara to poet devotees is the
uniqueness of the man-lion form and the "Rowdra" and "Soulabya" trait of this
incarnation. The Prahlada episode brings out the all-pervading Parabrahman even
as Lord Narayana emerged instantaneously to prove the devotee's word.
Potana, the great Telugu poet, has lost himself in picturising the
scene of Hiranyakasipu, Prahlada and Lord Narasimha where both the "Rowdra" and
"Soulabya" aspects come to play. The same inspiration makes Annamacharya
exclaim in these words:
Sari-Hiranyakasipu-samhara-
Simhamu Araya-Prahlaaduni-aa
pad-uddhaara-Simhamu
Inspite of the ferociousness of Narasimha, the avatara strikes
terror only on the wicked and blessing the pious
(Aareeti-neekolu-vitte Ahobalamu-meeda...... Saantamu-lokamu-meeda
as Annamacharya hails the Lord).
Of the 32,000 songs said to have been composed by Annamacharya, 500
are on Narasimha and 150 especially on Ahobilam. As in the case of Sri
Thyagaraja, who in the songs in Prahlada Bhakta Vijayam addresses Sri Rama,
Annamacharya too identifies Lord Narasimha with Lord Venkateswara of the Seven
Hills, his "Ishtadevata" (Hari Sri Venkatadri Ahobalesudu)Annamacharya has
composed hymns on the Nava Narasimhas.
The essence of them is the greatness of Saranagati, Acharya Bhakti
and for such devotees Lord Narasimha is not a terror but a benign,
<243>bewitching God (Daasula-mohana-Narasimhudu). His devotion boils down to
the sentiment Satata-Sree-Venkateswara-Divya-Narasimha.
The authors, in the first five chapters, deal with Narasimha
Avatara, as mentioned in several puranas, the significance of the Ahobila
Kshetra, Ahobila Math and the noteworthy Jeeyars and the life history of
Annamacharya. Towards the end of the book they have given the hymns of
Annamacharya in English script with meaning.
The book is well illustrated with colour pictures of Nava Narasimha
Kshetrams, Sri Ramanuja, the Jeeyars and two snapshots of upper Ahobilam and
lower Ahobilam.
As Sri Thyagaraja, in his work Prahlada Bhakta Vijayam, makes the
child devotee exclaim Naa-jayamunu-joochi-nammare-devuni (People do not have
faith in God even after seeing my triumph), the same is the message of
Annamacharya expressed in his songs on Narasimha Avatara and Ahobila Kshetra.
