Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

The other day casually one cinema song caught my attention [or got into my mind
for it triggered me into something else] while browsing the TV for some
interesting programme. Actually I failed in that attempt of seeing some
interesting programme but got this tidbit. That song is 'pORRip paadadi poNNE'
which the late sivaji ganesan sings.

[Nowadays where we see the TV? It is only browsing. Is it not? Many of you will
agree with me, I think. I am talking about general viewers like me - not the
'serious' 'serial' viewers].

This catapulted my thoughts to check with aaNdaal who also sang pORRip paadadi
poNNE - yes - she sang in her thiruppaavai - calling all her friends - hey our
girls - em paavaai - let us do that pORRi, pORRi and paadu paadu or paadi
paadi. She included this pORRi and paadu in several places in her composition
"thirup paavai".

She really invited all to join in that singing in praise of that lord krishNan
[or raaman? or narasinghan?] - to join in 'sathsangh' as sri sudharsan swamy of
Kuwait wrote earlier and requests my krishNa, the lord of aaNdaal to do that
'maRRai nam kaamangal maaRRu' by doing this 'pORRi paadu'.

Now let us see where all this pORRi has come first in the 30 paasurams.
        1. pORRap parai tharum puNNiyan - 10 - nORRuch chuvargam pasuram
        2. pORRi yaam vanthOm pugazhnthu - 21 - ERRa kalangaL paasuram
        3. adi pORRi - 24th paasuram anRu iv vulugalm
        4. thiRal pORRi - 24th paasuram anRu iv vulugalm
        5. pugazh pORRi -- 24th paasuram anRu iv vulugalm
        6. kazhal pORRi - 24th paasuram anRu iv vulugalm
        7. guNam pORRi- 24th paasuram anRu iv vulugalm
        8. vEl pORRi - 24th paasuram anRu iv vulugalm
        9. poRRaamarai adiyE pORRum - 29 chiRRam siru kale

The word paadu or sing is used in different modes and tenses - as a command,
continuous tense as paadu paada, paadi, thus significantly stressing the need
to sing his praise - pORRi paadu - in several places.

Then let us see where all this paadi or paada or paadu has come. To list that -
        1. In 1st paasuram - seer malgum aaip paadi
        2. In 2nd paasuram - paiyath thuyinRa paraman adi paadi
        3. In 3rd paasuram - ongi ulagu aLantha uththaman pEr paadi
        4. In 5th paasuram - thoo malar thoovith thozhudhu vaayinaal paadi
        5. In 8th paasuram - keezhvaanam - paavaai ezhinthiraai paadip
        6. In 11th paasuram - kaRRu - muRRam pugundhu mugil vaNNan pEr
paada
        7. In 12th paasuram - kanaiththu - manaththukkiniyaanai paadavum
        8. In 13th paasuram - puLLin - killik kaLaindhaanai keerththimai
paadip
        9. In 15th paasuram - ellE - maayanaip paadu
        10. In 16th paasuram - naayagan - thuyil ezhap paadu
        11. In 18th paasuram - unthu - maiththunan per paada
        12. In 24th paasuram - oruththi - thiruth thakka selvamum sEvagamum
yaam paadi
        13. In 26th paasuram - maale - poip paadu udaiyanave
        14. In 27th paasuram - koodarai - un thannaip paadip paRai

Now this paadu paadi paada is analysed as below along with that pORRi.

        1. seer malgum aaip paadi - first paasuram - here this paadi gives
a meaning village or colony or condominium and nothing to do with singing.
Paadi is used as a noun here. So this need not be taken into account for our
purposes of 'singing'.

        2. In second paasuram - paiyath thuyinRa paraman adi paadi - sing
the glory of the supreme lord who sleeps in the milk ocean.

        * This paraman's adi is also done that pORRi in 24th paasuram as
above ulagam aLanthaai adi pORRi.

        3. In third paasuram - ongi ulagu aLantha uththaman pEr paadi -
sing the glory of the name of that supreme lord who grew in size and measured
the world.

        * Sing this Ongi ulagu aLandha uththaman's pEr - great person's
name - or fame? - see pughazh pORRi - again in same 24th above - why to sing
that pughazh -fame - saying pORRi - initially that small size feet of vaamanan
became biggest to measure the world - as thrivikraman - but again that tiny tot
kutty krishNan did kick the cart - ponRach chagadam udhaiththaai - that small
tiny tot's leg did a big thing - to do roller coaster of that cart devil - his
pugazh - fame - pugazh pORRi.

        4. In fifth paasuram - thoo malar thoovith thozhudhu vaayinaal
paadi manaththinaal sindhikka - offer flowers and prey, sing openly by mouth
and think that vada madhurai mainthan - son from north mathura - in the mind.

        * when you sing - on what you will sing that too thinking again
and again - and then sing - again think - again sing - a continuous chain -
those guNams -innumerable guNams of the lord - so that can sing numberless
pORRi's to that guNam - again in 24.

        5. In eighth paasuram - keezhvaanam - paavaai ezhinthiraai paadip
paRai kondu maavaai piLandhaanai -Paavaai, nee ezhunthu paadi - to sing on what
- that thiRal - the power - maa vaaip piLantha thiRal of that krishNa - power
of the hands in opening the horses' mouth - sing pORRi to that thiRal

        * sing pORRi to that thiRal - even in that then ilankai cheRRa -
the power of hands of raama in destrying the lanka in south - sing pORRi to
that thiRal.

        6. In 11th paasuram - kaRRu - muRRam pugundhu mugil vaNNan pEr
paada - mugil vaNNa pEr - name of that black coloured lord krishNa.

        * name or fame of that cloud coloured - pughazh pORRi of 24.

        7. In 12th paasuram kanaiththu - manaththukkiniyaanai paadavum
vaai thiravaai -open your mouth to sing the glory of raama - for manaththukku
iniyaan is raaman

        * to think of him - immediately minds goes for his skill in
archery - so thiRal pORRi of 24

        8. In 13th paasuram -puLLin - killik kaLaindhaanai keerththimai
paadip pOi - to sing the glory of that person who nipped - his fame is to be
sung.

        * Here it is straight - keerththi is pughazh - for that sing a
pORRi.

        9. In 15th paasuram - ellE - maayanaip paadu El Or empaavaai -
maayan is krishNan - already same name given in 5th paasuram - to sing him.
Again I get a doubt - is it naama sankeerthanam or guNa sankeerthanam as in sri
vishNu sahasra naamam - though name is mentioned it is said as bhagavath guNa
dharpaNam - mirror to reflect his characteristics.

        * So what you will sing - guNam pORRi- of 24

        10. In 16th paasuram - naayagan - thuyil ezhap paaduvaan - vaayaal
- with mouth he will sing as suprabhaatham - sing morning wake up songs.

        * naaraayaNan nammaal pORRap paRai tharum puNNiyan - in verse 10
- then what to sing - his name or fame - fall back on sri vishna sahasra naamam
- sing.

        11. In 18th paasuram - unthu - maiththunan per paada - hey
nappinnai - we want to sing the name of brother in law.

        * Again a confusion is it name or fame - guNam pORRi is the easy
way out - for innumerable available to sing.

        12. In 24th paasuram - oruththi - thiruth thakka selvamum sEvagamum
yaam paadi - like the lakshmmi - wealth and servitude to you - we want to sing
that - result our sorrow is removed - varuththamum theernthu - not only
material benefits but also mind becomes free.

        *       pORRi yaam vanthOm pugazhnthu - 21 - ERRa kalangaL paasuram -
what is the result - of that singing - as stated above not only getting money
also sorrow is removed. So sing pORRi.

        13. In 26th paasuram maale - poip paadu udaiyanave - here this
'paadu' is a noun means some thing else and not singing. So not considered here.

        14. In 27th paasuram koodarai - un thannaip paadip paRai kondu yaam
perum sammaanam - by singing you we get lot of things as prize or gift.

        * There in 27 it is paadip paRai koNdu - here pORRap parai tharum
puNNiyan - 10 - nORRuch chuvargam pasuram

        * - oh what a great way - is it better to sing paadu or to do
pORRI

Dear bhakthaas, now I get confused. Is it simply paadu or pORRu or is it pORRip
paadu - whichever way done - result is paRai and also a lot of gifts - naadu
pugazhum parisu - soodagam, thOL vaLai, paadagam, also lot of dress - after
that - milk food added with ghee which flows through the arm length all on the
pongal day - wish you all a very happy pongal. Do not forget to do 'pORRip
paadu; that krishNa.

Dhasan
Vasudevan m.g.

PS: any mistake interpreting the verses may be pardoned since my focus was on
that pORRi and paada or paadu.
