dear shri vasudevan,
Kousalya's counting the age from Sri Rama's
upanayanam is not plausible, for a woman in great distress would definitely not
go into the nuances of dharma shastras and consider her son to have been born
only at the time of upanayanam. on this point, Sri Periavaacchaan Pillai
is quite categorical. i quote below the Acharya's lines (available not in the
Bhaarataadi Tanislokam book, but in the Ramayana Tanisloki)
"idu putra pravaasa janita du:khatthaale nirvinnai
aana stree vaartthai aagayaale, padu paadaaga piranda andru thudangi endru
prathama janmame aam itthanai pokki, shoka dasayile oru pendaatti avahitaiyaai,
dharma shaastram anusandittu, patthu kazhitthu dviteeya janmatthai vivakshikkkai
anuchitam aagaiyaalum, idu oru aarum pannirandum padinettaai, padinezhukku vinji
irukkaiyaalum seraadu"
dasan, sadagopan
