Post 18

Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

In previous posts we saw how the six paasurams of 'vaaraNam aayiram' padhikam of aaNdaaL, matchingly describe 'raama's marriage with seethaa' or aaNdaaL's 'dream thinking about her marriage' goes in lines of 'seethaa kalyaaNam'. We are in the marriage hall of 'seethaa raama kalyaaNam' wherein the paaNi grahaNam is just taking place.

We saw in post 16 the paNigrahaNam and in post 17 "maththaLam koTTa vari sangam ninRu ootha" of aaNdaaL -

        see the music came from sky in raama kalyaNam – dancing also – flower rains – all as stated by vaalmeeki - that music went on till all the 4 brothers did the religious rites completely, with guru vasishta leading the chanting of manthrams along with other great braahmaNa srEshtaas.

        paaNigrahaNam is slokam 26, other rituals are in slokams 34 to 36, music slokams are 37 and 38 [slokams and meaning below]

        so 'ninRu oothaa' – the music continued till all rituals are over.

        vaalmeeki's 'geetha + vaadhithra + niHsvanaiH', and 'nanrithuH + cha + apsaraH + sanghaa' – can it be taken as equal to aaNdaaL's ' vari sangam ninRu ootha' – the music parties – in lines, files and groups.

        for the word 'vari' is line -

        sangam in tamil mean a koottam - does mean not only a conch, but also an assembly, an association, a congregation.

        So 'vari sangam' – that music parties were in lines and files and in small groups – like the present day orchestra – a big gang with groups of one particular instrument at one place and several such groups – see words of 'geetha, vaadhithra' of vaalmeeki - all did the great music when the supreme lord is getting married.

1-73-37

pushpa + vrishTiH + mahathi + aaseeth = flower, showers, plentiful, is there [occurred];

antharikshaath + su + bhaasvaraa = from firmament, highly, dazzling;

dhivya + dhundhubhi + nirghoshaiH = divine, drums, drumbeats;

geetha + vaadhithra + niHsvanaiH = vocal, instrumental, tuneful [music] [aasiit= there is.]

meaning: There occurred plentiful and highly dazzling flower showers from firmament, and [that ambience is filled with] the drumbeats of divine drums and with vocal and instrumental music. [1-73-37]

1-73-38.

nanrithuH + cha + apsaraH + sanghaa = danced, also, apsara, promenades of;

gandharvaaH + cha + jaguH + kalam =gandharva-s, even, sang, tunefully;

vivaahE = in marriage;

raghu + mukhyaanaam= of Raghu, celebrated ones;

thath + adhbhutham + adhri syatha = that, charming spectacle, envisioned.

Meaning: Promenades of apsara-s danced on, and even the gandharva-s sang tunefully... and because it is the marriage of celebrated bridegrooms from Raghu's dynasty, such a charming spectacle is envisioned. [1-73-38]

Point: Oh a very grand paasuram of aaNdaaL just going in line with vaalmeeki's descriptions of raama seethaa kalyaaNam – now we move on to Next paasuram of aaNdaaL which reads

vaai nallaar nalla maRai Odhi mandhiraththaal

paasilai naaNal paDuththup paridhi vaiththu

kaaySina maa kaLiRu annaan en kai paRRi

thee valam seyyak kanaak kaNDEn thOzhee! Naan! 6-7 Nachchiyaar Thirumozhi.

Already the great sage vasishTa has arranged the 'dharbha aasanam' and other also lit the fire in the yagna vEdhikai – see below

slokam 1-73- 23b-24.

mahaa thEjaa muni pungava vasishTaH = great resplendent; eminent-saint; vasishTa;

samaiH = even-sized;

darbhaiH = with sacred grass;

vidhivath = customarily;

manthra + poorvakam = with Vedic-chants, synergising;

sam + aastheerya = neatly, overlaid;

vidhi + manthra + puraskrutham = reverently, Vedic-hymns, preceding [in tune];

tham + vEdhyaam = on that, Altar of Fire;

agnim + aadhaaya = fire, on taking [preparing with two sticks, arani];

juhaava + agnou = effused oblational liquids, in Altar of Fire.

Meaning: Then that great resplendent and eminent-saint Vashishta neatly overlaid even-sized sacred grass on that Altar of Fire, synergising with Vedic-chants, and on preparing fire [with 2 araNi sticks, and on placing it in the pit of Altar, it is aflame now, and then] reverently and in tune with the Vedic-hymns, he effused oblational liquids into that Altar of Fire, [with short-handled and long-handled wooden scoops.] [1-73-23b, 24]

1-73-34b-35a.

janakasya + vachaH + sruthvaa = Janaka's, words, on hearing;

paaNeen = palms;

paaNibhiH = with palms;

a sprisan = touched [palminpalmed];

chathvaaraH + thE + chathasrunaam = [all] four, those [bridegrooms,] of [all] four [brides]; vasishTasya + mathE + sthithaaH = in Vashishta's, opinion [in orchestration,] abiding.

1-73-35b-36.

krithvaa= on performing;

pradakshiNam = circumambulations;

saha + bhaaryaa = with, wives;

agnim = to Ritual-fire;

vEdhim = to Altar of Fire;

meaning: On hearing Janaka's words, all the four bridegrooms are 'palminpalmed' with all the four brides, abiding in Vashishta's orchestration [of Vedic hymns and procedures.] performed circumambulations along with their wives around the Ritual-fire, and around the Altar of Fire.

Point: See words of aaNdaaL – 'kaaisiNa maa kaLiRu annaan - en kai paRRi thee valam seyya – goes in line with vaalmeeki - 'paaNeen paaNibhiH asprusan agnim vEdhim pradhakshiNam krithvaa'.

Let us continue the remaining pasurams describing the balance marriage rituals in next post,

Dhasan
