The ChandOgya Upanishad states "AcharyADdhaiva vidhya viDhithA sAdhishtam prApath" (Knowldge gained from an Acharya alone will lead one to the ultimate good [Moksham]). Swami Desikan declares in the Subhashita nivi "ekaIva gurOr dhrushtyA..." (The benefit conferred by the looks of an Acharya with a single eye exceeds the combined benefit conferred from the looks of the three eyed one [Shiva], eight eyed one [Brahma] and the thousand eyed one [Indra/Perumal]. What then to speak of one who receives the full glances from two eyes of his Acharya?
