Post 2
Dear srivaishNava perunthagaiyeer,
We saw in the earlier post the beautiful krithi in 'narasimha aagachCha' in
raagam mOhanam. About the raagam, I quoted earlier that this mohana raagam
portrays mainly veera rasam, [in the write up "show grace please" on the
'dhayaraani' krithi, linking prahlaadha charithram and sabari mOksham]. So the
selection of raagam is very very apt for that krithi.
Also added, in that write up that mohanam raagam also gives a sense of majesty,
kaaruNyam, etc.
In narasimha avathaaram
* kaaruNyam is shown towards prahlaadhan,
* veeram exhibited to hiraNyakasibhu,
* majesty in execution of that killing
are all there. So the selection of raagam here also is a very apt one.
Now we will see the aazhvaar paasurams on this gatikaachala emperumaan, yoga
narasimhan and how Muthuswamy dhikshithar might have been influenced by
aazhvaar's paasurams. First the paasuram on shOlingur emperumaan.
mikkaanai maRaiyaai virindha viLakkai ennuL
pukkaanaip pugazh sEr poliginRa pon malaiyai
thakkaanaik kadigaith thadam kunRin misai irundha
akkaarak kaniyai adaindhu uyndhu pOnEnE.
- 8-9-4 - thirumangai aazhvaar in periya thirumozhi
meaning:
mikkaanai - the sarvEswaran - One who is the Greatest and Biggest of all;
unparalleled one.
maRaiyaai virindha viLakkai - the basic source of light or the chief as
proclaimed and mentioned in "authorless" Vedas.
ennuL pukkaanai - one who has entered into adiyEn's heart; due to which he
becomes even greater in His qualities; [actually pukkaan - means one who will
not enter so easily on his own, or he is incapable of entering because my mind
is so hard not to allow him to enter into me. But even then he has entered.
That shows his capacity to penetrate, or imprint. Another way to look at is, he
does not want to enter because I am so hard - but once I allow a small entry,
he comes occupies and just after that never leaves me - for in the next line it
is said by aazhvaar - adainthu uyinthu - I entered into his domain, and he
filled in me in full because of which I got all what I have to]
pugazh sEr poliginRa pon malaiyai - one who is like the mountain made of purest
Gold;
thakkaanai - the most compassionate and most merciful Lord
kadigaith thadam kunRin misai irundha akkaarak kaniyai - One who is there at
the huge mountain of Thiruk kadigai [shOlingur] like the akkaara adisil; so
sweetest to us, and is completely insatiable;
adaindhu uyndhu pOnEnE - adiyEn [me] is blessed to have held onto Him and been
saved by Him.
Let us recall what muthuswamy dhikshithar [MD] has said in his krithi narasimha
aagachcha in line with this paasuram
1. Thirumangai azhvaar [TA] says mikkaanai - that sarvEswaran -
One who is the Greatest and Biggest of all; unparalleled one. MD says
'parabrahma puchCha' = of the form of the Supreme!
2. TA says maRaiyaai virindha viLakkai - the basic source or light
which spread itself as the vEdhaas. MD says hari hara brahma indhra aadi
poojitha athyachCha = who else will be worshipped by Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma,
Indra and others, including vEdhaas - that supreme lord - maRaiyaai virindha
viLakkai.
3. TA says 'ennuL pukkaanai' [detailed meaning as above] - MD
says 'sva ichCha' = One who moves at will! - moves at will into my hard mind
also without any reservation or hesitation.
4. TA says 'pon malaiyai' - the mountain made of purest Gold. MD
says 'hEma kOtisvara' = Akin to gold and ten million suns in effulgence! Multi
Crore pathi of gold - what he will do - will he put it the gold biscuits neatly
in boxes and then stack the boxes in a row to count easily and take stock at
frequent intervals - no - just heap it for he has that in abundance - so
careless not to stack it or stock it - that heaped stuff will look like hillock
of gold - so pon malaiyai. Oh what a coincidence with aazhvaar's lines.
5. TA says 'akkaarak kaniyai' so sweetest to us, and is completely
insatiable; MD says - vara mOhana = Radiant in an enchanting form! That
enchanting is so sweet that there is no quenching of that taste - never able to
quench - vara mOhana narasimha.
6. TA says 'adaindhu uyndhu pOnEnE' - adiyEn [me] is blessed to
have hold onto Him and been saved by Him. MD says 'sarasa guruguha hrdhaya
sahachara' = Ever present in the soft heart of guruguhan. Holding on to him and
he ever willing to live in me - my heart became so soft for he lives there -
what is the difference - the pith and substance same but way of expressing -
due to language difference?
Just the krithi once more for its super quality - in enjoying narasimha.
Pallavi:
narasimha aagachCha parabrahma puchCha sva ichCha svachCha
Anupallavi:
hari hara brahma indhra aadi poojitha athyachCha
parama bhaagavatha prahlaadha bhakthyachCha
Caranam :
dheerathara ghatikaachala eesvara
soura thara hEma kOtisvara veera
vara mOhana vibhaasvara maara vara
maanava hareesvara murahara nagadhara
sarasija kara parama purusha pavanaja
subha kara suruchira kari giri varadha
vichaara sarasa guruguha hrdhaya sahachara
enjoy that akkaarak kani of aazhvaar and ghatikaachala eesvara of dhikshithar.
