respected members:

This is a cry of an anguished soul.

What is mentioned by shri Rajagopalan seems the most appropriate ideal, but
one would like to have your experienced views, especially what the
scriptures say in practical situations.

To put it briefly: What if parents, God forbid, what if parents themselves
behave in a manner detrimental to the well being of their own child ? One
is sure many of you may be shocked, but this is a fact. which this writer
has witnessed first hand. Especially, of grand parents well nearly 80 who
have had a cushy life and who are well looked after, incidentally by their
own children? Elders who are full of their own bloated ego, superstition,
rules, bigoted views imposing themselves on their dependents ?
Elders who are pitiless, unmindful of the problems of other family members
surrounding them, being ruthless in their ways and rigid attitude ?
Elders who are in fit body and mind condition, who selfishly satisfy their
material needs by demanding and resorting to devious ways of achieving
their ends?
Elders who break the family bonding by cunning ways of divide and rule and
playing one against the other ?

To the limited knowledge of this ignorant writer, Dharma dictates "do your
duty" Period. Do not expect anything in return, no anticipated rewards of
kindness. This is also confimed in the scriptures and the Gita. And true to
the dictates of Dharma, the children continue to take care of the elder
/parents/grandparents, but yes, how much of patienct does Dharma stipulate?

Many such instances of passive and subtle ruffling of the domestic ideal
day in and day out cannot be easily shared or told in public but are borne
silently in many households.

The mind also says that this is the fruit of one's past karma i.e. the
child's past bearing fruit.

One has spoken to great acharyas, learned teachers, erudite scholars, and
there is no clear answer yet.

What is true and what is fiction ?

Om tat Sat
tat tvam asi

Friends

It is your parents who are responsible for your birth, education and  what
you are to day. They have done this without expecting any return from you.
It does not mean that they need nothing. As one gets advanced age, he / she
gets more devoted towards god. They do more chanting of slokas and think of
visiting Temples. Here you can help them by gifting them a pilgrimage. It
will definitely make them very happy. But remember this pilgrimage gift
should be timely, yes before they become too old to undertake such trips.
There are number of Shrines and Temples to visit in India. There are 106
Divyadesams (abodes of Shriman Narayana) and a few Abhimana Sthalams ...
Sriperumbudur, Maduranthagam, Srimushnam, Mannargudi, Melkote, Pushkar etc.
Your parents will cherish the memory of their visits to these places. Act
fast before it becomes too late.
