Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

We saw in the previous post, how vaalmeeki and kamban dealt with the 'desire laden' or 'kaama mohitha' character ayOmukhi, glorifying all the time the mismatch in love, she had on lakshmaNa. So far we covered 3-mismatched 'kaamam' – that 'porundhaak kaadhal' --

        In raavana to seethaa.

        In soorpaNakhaa to raama

        In ayOmukhi to lakshmaNa

Now we will move on to the 'porundhina' or acceptable kaamam of sugreeva – his kaamam with his own legitimate wife and 'thaaraa' his ex-brother's wife.

Perhaps now you may get a click –

1. Because vaali snatched sugreevaa's wife rumaa, raama justified to vaali hitting him with arrow or killing of him [vaali] for injustice done to sugreeva, raama's friend. If sugreeva also does same mistake of taking vaali's wife, will raama not punish sugreeva? And, if so, what punishment he got at raama's hand? Is it for that lakshmaNa was sent to convey raama's angry mood? That is the aspect to be analysed and studied, in this kaamam series. No sirs.

2. Then, is it that sugreeva, without thaaraa's consent, took her and enjoyed her along with his wife rumaa? If so, how raama treated his friend's aberration? That is the aspect to be studied? Again a big 'No' - sirs.

Then what for this is included by sage vaalmeeki if the above two are not the reasons?

That is the point to be studied.

For kaamam – desire – even if it legitimate – that too with one's own wife – that which is allowed in all dharma saasthrams of our land, 'bhaarath' – yes, kaamam with one's wife is permitted and all that. But this is to be enjoyed within limits. Kaamam should not interfere in certain duties to do.

That is the point. That too when a 'big assurance' is given to raama by sugreeva while making friendship with raama. When a 'time bound task' is ahead for sugreeva, indulging in excessive kaamam is not fit.

For that matter any other one, past, present, or future, one should not indulge in kaamam forgetting the 'duty'. Duty comes first and not love. So, that is why, kaamam even though with legitimate wife rumaa and with consented lady like thaaraa, this  kaamam of sugreeva is to be studied and lessons learnt.

As stated raamaayaNam is not only a "hero's story", it has many moral lessons, management aspects, and dharma saasthram inbuilt, without specifically being told so.

meaning: The valiant Sugreeva who is by now the king of monkey army, then apprised the great-souled Raama about his grand anointment, and thus he, not only regained his wife Rumaa, but also secured the kingdom, like the chief of divinities Indhra.

Point: see how valmeeki subtly puts it across, at raama's consent and help only sugreeva got his kingdom, as well his wife rumaa. See next what is sugreeva's behaviour.

[After this 26th sargam both raama and sugreeva agree to 'since it is rainy season, let us wait for the rainy season to be over'. In 27th sargam raama feels the separation of seethaa and lakshmaNa consoles, and in 28th  rainy season is glorifyed.]  Once that season is over see what happens.

thereby he is making much of his fortune on getting rid of other problems.

meaning: He, [sugreeva] reposed the activity of kingdom in his ministers. Yet, he, who does not meet the eyes of those ministers since he is not having doubts about administration of the kingdom which was once disrupted from his control, because, that kingdom was looked after well by the very same ministers. As such he is wallowing in promiscuity.

Such as he is, that golden-tongued Hanumaan, the son of Air-god, sought the presence of such a Sugreeva, king of monkeys. Hanumaan, the explicator, even on winning king's grace, who is forthright regarding norms of ethics, an exceptional knower of subtleties of transactions and the rubrics of duty and time, spoke sweet words that are reasonable, heart-pleasing, beneficial, pragmatic, profitable, impressive, immaculate, imperative, and impartial, and which words are also inclusive of the care and concern of Hanumaan, on making a determination with a belief that Sugreeva will pay heed to his words [started talking to him]

Point: From the above it is clear, that, even though the kingdom is obtained afresh [after, and from vaali] sugreeva failed in his duty to reconstruct his empire and left it to the ministers to rule – of course he had confidence in his ministers – that is a different matter - for they were the same during the earlier sojourn, when vaali returned and drove sugreeva away and run for his life.

He was indulging in kaamam with his newly got back wives rumaa and thaaraa. That good minister hanumaan wanted to remind of the kingdom and his duty – not oly to raama on the assurance but on his own raajyam.

Also see the good nature of minister hanumaan being described elaborately by vaalmeeki. Perhaps if a king has suchministers like hanumaan they can go for all these. But in the world there can be one hanumaan only, not many.

Let us continue in next post.
