Dear VedAbhimAnis
:
Few days ago, I had the good fortune
of recieving
from Srirangam 18 MP 3 CDs covering
the following
Four VedAs :
Rg , Saama , Sukla and KrishNa Yajur
Vedams ( 4 CDs Each)
and 2 MP 3 CDs for Atharva
Vedam . I have begun listening to
these MP 3 Quality recordings from
Veda Prasar Samithi
( www.vedchant.com) . May I refer the
interested VedAbhimAnis
to details on these recordings at
the above Web site . Short audio
clippings of the individual VedAs
can also be heard there .
adiyEn expresses my profound
gratitude to Sri A.KrishNan
of Srirangam for his thoughtfulness
.
Please send e-mail to Sriman
A.KrishNan , President of
Veda PrasAr Samithi at Srirangam for
additional details .

For easy navigation , Track lists on
each of the 18 CDs have
been given to serve as a detailed
index for each Veda for helping
with the cross linking of the
Mantras . The Lists give for each track,
reference to the opening and
closing tracks for specific mantras of
each vedAs .
Rig Vedam
***************
Well known mantrAs of SookthAs
like the Vaalakhilya SookthAs of Rig Vedam
are identified . 36 Khila Rks
like Sri Sooktham, Raathri Sooktham are picked out
and related to tracks . The
correlation between Mandala and ashtaka types
of classification
in Rig Vedam is
accomplished for our convenience .
Mandala consists of AnuvAkAs ,
SookthAs and Riks( MantrAs).
Ashtaka consists of adhyAya , varga
and Riks ( mantras). It can be difficult
to go from Mandala to ashtaka .
Veda prasAr Samithi has taken the trouble
to cross-index the two for the
serious student of Rig Vedam , the Aadhi Vedam .
Khila SookthAs /Riks are seperately
assembled in a chart for easy location .
Khila Riks like Sri Sooktham are
normally recited . Some Khila Riks like
Sri Prathyangira are not recited
after the VargAs . Among the 36 Khila
containing
293 Riks/MantrAs,
96 khila riks are not traditionally recited .
The organizers of these tracks point
out what ar erecitable & what are not.
Vaalakhilya Riks have 80 Riks .
Vaalakhilya Rishis are thumb sized and
are 60,000 in number ; they travel
with the Sun , face Soorya NaarAyaNan and
recite Gaayathri Mantram in
front of Him continously .There are 11 SookthAs
associated with them and they are
powerful to recite .
Saama Vedam
******************
The classification by Saama GhAnam
type along the tracks and
identification of the categories of
Grameeyam AaraNya geyam ,
Uooham and Rahasyam are extremely
useful. In the CD 3 , there is
a commentary in Tamil ( ~14 minutes)
, which AaseervAdha Saamans
and VaamadEvya Saamans . PavamAna
Saamans , Shree VishNu
chamakam , Shree VishNu AavAhanam ,
KarNa manthram , Shree
Surya NamaskAram dheepa Mantram ,
Dhoopa Mantam , NeivEdhya Mantram ,
Thambhoola mantam and NeerAjana
Saamans are identified by
track location and the time it takes
to recite them . These are extremely
helpful indicators .One knows what
one is hearign and can go straight
to them as needed
.
Sukla Yajur
Vedam
***************************
Some examples of Krama Paatam is included and
special Sukla Yajur Veda Mantrams
Such as Pithru Sooktham , Gaayathri , Sri Rudram ,
Purusha Sooktham , VaruNa mantram
et al are identified by tracks in the CD
.
KrishNa Yajur Vedam
***************************
This Vedam was given by Veda VyAsa to his disciple
, Sage VysampAyana.
It consists of 82 PrasnAs ( 44 PrasnAs in Samhitha
with 7 KaaNdAs ,
BrahmaNAs with 25 PrasnAs including Kaatakam and
3 Ashtakams,
as well as AaraNyakam( AruNam with 10
PrasnAs).
Some of important mantrams like SriRudram ,
chamakam ,
Sapthapathi , Soorya NamaskAram , Mantra Pushpam
,
ThrusuparNam , NaarAyaNa Sootham are identified
by
track locations for ready access
.
Atharva Vedam
*******************
There are 5987 MantrAs here in 20 KaaNdams. Some
of the famous
Sookthams of Atharva Vedam are : VaruNa Sooktham ,
Ucchishta
Brahma Sooktham , Nakshathra Sooktham , Raathri
Sooktham ,
dheergAyush Soothram , Garbha RakshaNa soothram et
al .
They are all indexed by tracks and the duration to
recite .
There are two schools of thought about recitation
of
Atharva Vedam . The residents of northern part of
India ,
where Atharva Vedam is prevalent , recite from
abdomen ,
where as the people from South recite from kanTam
. We
should not get into questions about who is right
but enjoy
the Vedam as handed down by the poorvAs
.
Next , adiyEn will complete the comparison of
Saama Vedic
thought in ThiruvAimozhi and move on to other
Vedam related matters.
