The Significance of ânArAyaNanAyaâ
---
SwAmi Desikan now gives the significance of âAyaâ, the fourth case
suffix of the name ânArAyaNaâ, in a Tamil verse:
âiru vilangku kazhitthiDarAm uDalam thannil
ilangku naDu nADiyinAl emmai vAngi
oru vilangku neRiyallA vaziyAl mannum
uyar vAnilERRi uyir nilaiyum thanthu
peruvilangkAm aruL thannAl thannaDikkeezhp
piriyAtha amararuDan piNaitthuth thannAr
uruvil angku misaivikkum umbar bOgam
ukanthu tharum thirumAlai ukanthOm nAmE.â
Meaning:
âiru vilangku kazhitthâ â getting rid of the two fetters of good and
sinful deeds;
âiDarAm uDalam thannilâ --- in this body which is a stumbling block for
mukti;
âilangku naDu nADiyinAlâ --- through the middle nerve known as
âbrahma-nADiâ;
âemmai vAngiâ --- picking us â jIvAtamas (from the body);
âoru vilangku neRiyallA vaziyAlâ --- through the route (of
arcchirAdi-mArgam) that does not lead to rebirth in this samsAra (material)
world;
âmannum uyar vAnilERRiâ --- lifted us up into the eternally existing the
highest abode, the Paramapadam;
âuyir nilaiyum thanthuâ --- restoring the auspicious qualities that had
been hidden due to our connection with the karmas;
âperuvilangkAm aruL thannAlâ --- by His grace that strongly binds the
jIvAtma;
âthannaDikkeezhp piriyAtha amararuDan piNaitthuâ --- joining us with the
ever-free jIvas (nitya sooris) who are rendering service continuously without a
break (even for a moment) under His feet;
âangkuâ --- there, in the Paramapadam;
âthannAr uruvilâ --- in His perfect nature;
âmisaivikkum umbar bOgamâ --- providing the same experience as of the nitya
sooris;
âukanthu tharum thirumAlaiâ --- attaining the Lord, the Consort of SrI, Who
happily provides us the bliss;
âukanthOm nAmEâ --- we become happy.
Summary Meaning:
Lord SrIman nArAyaNa destroys the twin karmas of good and evil of the
jIva who has adopted the means of mukti; thereafter, He releases the jIva from
his body which had been a stumbling block to his liberation and escorts him
through the central nerve, known as the brahma-nADi and rushes him to His Abode
(Paramapadam) through the path of arcchirAdi; the Lord also restores the
jIvaâs divine qualities which had been hidden because of his contact with the
good and bad karmas; He takes the mukta jIva by His graceful but firm clutch
that does not allow the jIva to slip away; places him in the company of
nitya-sooris who are rendering continuous service at His feet in the
Paramapadam; and enables him to experience the total bliss of enjoying Him.
This is the crux of the suffix âAyaâ attached to the Lordâs name,
ânArAyaNaâ in the Thirumanthiram.
