LOkAchArya guravE Krishna pAdasya soonavE

SamsAra bhOga sandashta Jeeva JeevAtavE namaH

Swami Sri Pillai LOkAcharya was the son of Sri Krishnapada who was popularly
known as Vadakku Tiruveedhi Pillai and had his kalakshepams both from his
revered father and the most famous Periya VAchAn Pillai and Nambillai.
Hemastered all the shastras at a very young age and was very well-versed in
both Tamil and Samskrit. He wrote 18 treatises, which came to be known as
"rahasya granthas" of which Sri Vachana Bhooshanam (SVB) is recognized as the
essence of VishitAdwaitha siddAntha. The vyAkhyAnam by VishadavAk shikhAmani
Swami Manavala MamunigaL is the most authentic among all the many commentaries
for SVB. Swami MAmunigaL has dedicated 7 stanzas ( #53 to #59) in his Upadesha
Rathna mAlai to describe the greatness of SVB, a brief translation of which is
given below:

53. It is no exaggeration to say that none of the other Rahasya Granthas
bySwami Pillai LokAchArya are more exalted than SVB.

54. Since this grantha is full of PoorvAchArya Sri sookthIs, like an ornament
made of valuable gems, and serves as a shining adornment to those who learn it
by heart and recite it, it was named as "Vachanabhooshana" by the AchAryas.

55. It is very hard to find one who fully comprehends the inner meanings ofSVB
and follows it to the core.

56. Swami says " Those of you who are interested in salvation, I tell you,
learn the beautiful grantha by lOkAchArya through an AchArya and lead your
lives by what you have learnt.

57. He continues " Alas, why do those who learn its sacred meanings from
anAchAryan and contemplate on it, do not follow them?"

58. When a great work is authored, many commentaries come into being; because
of this many a vyAkhyAnams may be written for SVB. As long as these adhere to
our sampradAyam, do study them impartially.

59. In this last stanza on SVB Swami concludes humbly, "Even someone like me
finds the contemplation of its delightful meanings and its mere rendition so
delectable, I wonder what a great joy it would bring to all of you!"

By the causeless grace of the Alwars and AchAryAs, we the residents of USA,are
extremely fortunate to be able to participate in the SVB kAlakshEpams by none
other than His Holiness Sri Vanamamalai Jeeyar every last and firstSundays of
the month, right in the comfort of our homes reminding us verily of the
parathvam and sowlabhyam of the Lord Himself...

This is a humble call for more and more bhAgavathas to participate in such a
once-in-a-life-time opportunity. For those of you who have not been fortunate
to participate till now and would like to take part in the future, a gist of
what has been covered so far is given below.

Over the past few months Swami has covered ?Prathama Prakaranam? of SVB. In
this Prakaranam, there are 114 choornikais or choornais or soothrams. Choornais
1 to 22 talk of the relative importance of 'itihasas' in general and,
SrirAmAyana and MahAbhArata in particular, compared to Smritis and PurAnas and
delve in greater detail into 'upAya vaibhavam'. Soothrams 23 to 33describe the
conditions (or the lack of it!) for prapatti, except for the Object or Vishaya
niyamam. The importance of archAvatara is covered in choornikais 34 to 40. In
choornikais 41 to 54, three categories of Prapannas are described. The next set
of soothrams from 55 to 114, deal with how even Prapatti is not an upAya or
means.

The next kAlakshepam by Jeeyar Swamin on December 27th will take us to
UpAyAntara dOsha niroopaNam under Dwitheeya prakaranam, wherein the defects of
other upAyAs are dealt with. It is hoped that more and more bhAgavathas will
take time to participate in these upanyAsams and make use of the wonderful
opportunity to learn our siddhAntam.
