Temple Samprokshanam: Srinivasa Perumal and Kulasekara Azhvar in Kerala

== Old note from Sri U.Ve Velukkudi V. Krishnan Swami ==

Kulasekara alwar the 6th of the mystic poets was born on Masi month
punarvasu star in early kali yuga. Kulasekara alwar was a kshatriya king.
He had spiritual intimacy with Rama and was tuned so much that Ramas's
joy and sorrow was his.

In fact his life history says that he once set forth with his army to save Rama
from the 14000 demons in Janasthana, forgetting that Rama was in treta yuga
and he was in Kali yuga. He is the only alwar to be called as Kulasekara
Perumal since Rama is known as Perumal in our sampradaya.

This alwar sung 105 songs in tamil collectively known as
Perumal tirumozhi. He has narrated the history of rama in brief in 10 songs
and also visited various other shrines like Srirangam, Tirupathi,
Tirukkannapuram,
Ayodhya and so on.
He outpours the lament of devaki and dasaratha who missed
the experiences of krishna and Rama due to separation. It is said that he
had a daughter by name Serakulavalli who was married to Lord Ranganatha.
she is consecrated inside Srirangam temple. In the later period of his life,
alwar relinquished the kingdom and went on kshetraatanam.

All the alwars except Kulasekara alwar have got a temple at their
divine birth place. Swamy Nammalwar India foundation went on a tour to Kerala
divyadesams (13 in number). I was there along with 300 devotees. It struck
us that there was no temple for Kulasekara alwar in his birth place. Swamy
Vedanta Desika and Swamy Manavala mamunigal mention his birth place as
Tiruvanji kalam. On a search, this is around 50 kms away from Trichur in
Kerala. This is a part of a bigger town called Kodungallur. We had to go
through lot of records and discuss with local people, archeologists,
Devaswam board and the descendants of the Kulasekara Raja family.
They were all quite cooperative. They revealed that there is a Krishna temple
built by Kulasekara alwar in the same place and we were taken there.
Lord Krishna is so beautiful there with chandana kappu. It is popularly
believed that
Kulasekara alwar sung Mukunda mala in praise of this Krishna. It is still being
recited there.

Two years back, the foundation approached the Devaswam board and they were
kind enough to allot a piece of land free of cost near the old temple.
However due to barriers of state, language etc the project
had to face legal problems. All are cleared now and the kainkaryam is
nearing completion.

Swamy Nammalwar India Foundation has been allotted 5000 sq.ft land. The
garbha graha would be 12 ft x 12 ft and a maha mandapam of 800 sq.ft.
There would be three sanctum sanctorums, one for Lord Venkatesa and the other
for Kulasekara Azhwar and the third for Nathamuni, Yamanuna Muni, Ramanuja,
Vedanta Desika and Manavala Mamuni. On one side of the Maha mandapam the
105 songs and on the other side Mukunda mala would be inscribed. On the
pillars and top of the mandapam the Ramayana and Bhagavata stories as
explained by alwar would be carved. All the three garbha grahas would have
vimanams. A majestic raja gopuram invites everyone at the maha dvaram.

The temple would be built and submitted to a joint committee of the Cochin
Devaswom board and Swamy Nammalwar India foundation. The board has
stipulated that a corpus fund be created to run the temple forever. A
poojari would be sent from Tamil Nadu and would be appointed by devaswam
board who can be trained by us on pancharatra agama to do the pooja. This
temple, which has religious, historical and social significance would
stand as an example of fusion of different cultures.
