Dear SrEVaishNavites,

After about a year or so, the nirhEAthuham topic has surcaced in a different context.

Mrs. Jayshree Saranathan writes that a devotee got salvaged by the Lord, though she did not strictly follow the parameters. Shri Guna Venkat also talks of nirhEAthu kripai and mentions that if a person goes astray and falls into vices, it means that he has not received the Grace of the Lord, yet.

Let us analyse the following facts.

1. Yes , the salvation is His prerogative. There is no dispute in this regard. arulich chyeal and rahasya granthangaL put forward this theory.

2. Does it mean that one can do anything he wants or keep silent? If everything is according to His will and wish then what will happen. Every good or bad will have to be dedicated to him. This will lead to a dangerous situation.

3.This takes us again to 'parAyathAdhikaraNam'.What does it say.The initila decision making rests with the soul. This free will makes the vital difference. The choice of going good or bad, thus rests with the jEvAthmA. The ensuing process is accentuated by the Almighty in the direction of the intial direction the AthmAn takes.

4. The first Suthram of AchArya Hrdhayam underlines this point. "Parama-kAruNakarAna sarvEswaran aRivenum nandhA viLakku'' and continues with 'vivEka palam ' and so on. The Almighty graces us with physique , senosry organs and senses. These are to be used properly by the AtmAn. However, if by continuous acts, the soul goes astray, what can the Lord do.The soul distances from the Lord more and more.

5. Then the question of 'nirhEathukam comes up. If then the soul distances by such decision and goes astray, then is it a guarantee that those souls who take benign ways, get salvation. No' is the categorical answer. Well, the LOrd is swathanthran. He has got some fixed set of grammar to follow. The Supreme is further independant.  Therefore, the initial decison or free will's result toward good deed does not definitely guarantee salvation. At the same time, it does not also distances away from the Lord.

6. Due to Lord's precipitatin of the initial decision, the soul is slowly shifted from indiffrence and apathy towards the Lord to a sate of interest and devotion. The soul somehow gets attracted towards bhagavath vishyam, bhAgavathAs and AchAryan.

7. The AchAryan imparts knowledge particularly Thriumandhiram with the principal aim of relieving form the samsAram.

8. Now, the soul and the Lord are at the crossroads. BOth have a question in their mind. Where have you been all these days/ Here comes PirAtti advocating for both.

9. Ultimately by the causeless mercy of the LOrd starting from granting physique, senses, sensory organs, accepting the advocacy of PirATTi, granting the final path leading to granting nithya kainkaryam.

10. Despite all this the Almighty can reject the soul. Despite a soul who has gone astray, the Lord may grant salvation. However, these are not general rules as such.

11. If it is so, then the repeated upadhEsam-s byAzhwAr-s regarding the way of life, in the context of other deities, thirunAmam would become naught.

The PurvAchAryAs grantham-s  especially that of Sri RamAnujar and Sri PiLLai LokAchAr would be rendered meaningless. The first chUrnikai of dhvyap prakaraNam  of mumUkshuppadi ' puRampuNdAna paRRukkaLai vAsanaiOdEa vidugaium...' will all become null and void, if this theory that one goes astray due to his lack of mercy is accepted.

12. Therfore, good code and conduct as prescribed by AzhwAr-s and AcharyAs have to be followed to the extent possible. The dos and donts given therein and demonstrated by them  need to be respected and followed by one and all.

13. Think of Him always is the macro message from AzhwAr-s.
